Toronto acquires:

Taylor Beck

SCOUTING REPORT

Assets: Has excellent offensive makeup, as well as very good size. Can play on either side of center, which adds to his overall value.

Flaws: Needs plenty of work without the puck and in defensive situations. Also needs to make more of his 6-2, 203-pound frame.

Career Potential: Talented winger with some upside.

Nashville acquires:

Jamie Devane

SCOUTING REPORT

Assets: Is a big, tough hombre. Can be a real force in the hitting department, as well as an enforcer willing to drop the gloves to protect teammates and police things on the ice.

Flaws: Must continue to improve his skating and overall game, as he isn't capable of playing effectively for more than a few shifts at the National Hockey League level.

Career Potential: Physical depth winger/heavyweight enforcer.

TORONTO - The Toronto Maple Leafs announced on Sunday that the club has acquired forward Taylor Beck from the Nashville Predators in exchange for forward Jamie Devane.

Beck produced eight goals and 16 points in 62 games with Nashville last season his first full year in the NHL after spending time with the American Hockey League's Milwaukee Admirals.

The 24-year-old native of St. Catharines, Ont. was selected by the Predators 70th overall in the 2009 NHL Draft after spending his four-year junior career with the Guelph Storm alongside current Leaf centre Peter Holland.

Devane has spent the majority of his professional career with the AHL's Toronto Marlies, posting six goals, 15 points and 253 penalty minutes in 118 games.

The 24-year-old Mississauga, Ont. native also appeared in his first two NHL contests with Toronto during the 2013-14 season.

Devane, originally selected two spots ahead of Beck in the 2009 NHL Draft, missed the 2015 AHL playoffs after having season-ending surgery to repair a lower-body injury.

Don't worry Canucks faithful. Benning has a plan. Here it is:

Play the next season with the present roster, the inclusion of six rookies making the Canucks a harder team to play against.

At the trade deadline, the Canucks package up Jannik Hansen, Chris Higgins, and Yannick Weber to Buffalo for Evander Kane.

At the start of free agency, Benning signs Milan Lucic to a 5 year, $30 M contract.

Then Benning packages Radim Vrbata, Alexander Grenier, Luca Sbisa, and Frank Corrado and a 2017 2nd rounder to Nashville for Shea Weber.

Line up for 2016-2017

Lucic - Horvat - Kane

Sedin - Sedin - Virtanen

Burrows - Bonino - Boeser

Prust - Gaunce - Dorsett

Edler - Weber

Hamhuis - Tanev

Pedan - Clendening

Hutton

Markstrom

Nice, here's my pipe dream.

Canucks win the Stanley Cup before I die.

This trade looks bad on paper for Nashville: Devane is an AHL enforcer and Taylor Beck can play on the 3rd or the 4th.

BUT it makes so much sense for Nashville. It is unlikely that Beck would have made the team this October. They have just too many young prospects pushing for spots and GM Poile is committed to allow them to make the team. As it stands they still have more forwards than spots available. He is just not part of their future plans and keeping a player for depth just blocks giving an opportunity to a prospect.

Also Beck has filed for arbitration and it is likely that he will get a one-way deal that the team will not be able to turn down. Reminder that any arbitration award under 3.5M has to be accepted by the team - there is no walk away in that situation.

It's also the decent thing to do for Beck's sake - it allows him to start early with a new team instead of getting picked up off waivers come October or worse be buried in the AHL. It's also not ideal for Nashville if no one picks him up and they end up paying him an NHL salary in the AHL.

They likely offered him around the league for a low pick and there were no takers. So they just took whatever offer was available and Devane was redundant in Toronto as they got Clune (after he got bought out by Nashville). With Clune gone and Liambas signed in Chicago, Nashville was anyway probably going to sign an enforcer to protect their young prospects in Milwaukee - seems it's still a needed security in the AHL.

This trade just shows how difficult it is to get value but that sometimes you have to sell low for the sake of simply moving the team forward while being fair to the player and Nashville is looking at the bigger picture - it's not about the poor return on a trade but about freeing a roster spot for a prospect that has more upside and not hindering Beck's career.

This partly explains Zack Kassian's low value. Taylor Beck had 16 points (although he played more games), the same as Zack Kassian.

And all they got for him was a career AHL'er.

Face it folks. Teams seem to be happy with their draft picks and prospects it would seem. Even Franson hasn't been signed.

Although I highly doubt this will happen, I'd really like it to.
