The Marlies are the class of the AHL and the Comets are a bubble team with a bunch of lineup holes... tough to see that kind of score especially when they've done a good job this season of keeping all their games vs Toronto close. 6-1 at the end of the 2nd now.

Marlies are deep too. Emery is their third goalie. Not that Emery is necessarily good anymore but it's still rare for an A squad to carry a third who was recently a regular in the NHL.

I see Clendening is on the waiver wire.  Would be a good depth signing for us.  Not sure what his contract looks like probably the minimum.

If we claim him, then doesn't he have to stay on the big team?  Didn't we just have this guy, and moved him for something?

Yes, he'd have to stay on the NHL roster, but I wouldn't be opposed to seeing Weber waived in favour of Clendening. It seems Weber has maybe worked himself out of the rotation and Clendening would at least (likely) still have some upside. He was originally acquired from Chicago for Gustav Forsling and then shipped to Pittsburgh for sutter.

Then maybe JB will take him back?  We could always do like the Leafs did with Corrado, and just sit him, and then send him to the minors for conditioning, then sit him.

oh crap I didn't realize that.  Forget it then. I want him for Utica only.  I figure when Hamuis comes back after All Star game Weber may have to negotiate the waiver wire.

Clendenning....good bye, good riddance and don't let the door hit you in the *** on the way out.  Never liked him from the day he arrived in Utica with the attitude "I'm too good for the AHL".  Guess what buddy you aren't good enough for the NHL.  He is now with his 4th NHL organization in a about a year.  I smell a problem player here.

There's no way we take back Clendenning. We traded him and Bonino away at the same time and it was a great move. Those 2 had the slowest footspeed on the team and Benning's mandate is clearly to get as fast as possible.

Agreed. It's highly unlikely we'd have any interest in reacquiring Clendenning at this point. Just too slow a skater for the direction Benning is taking this team in.

The thing that still boggles the mind is why we traded for him in the first place. From my perspective, it initially made sense based on his stats and pedigree. I hadn't seen much of his actual play, but his numbers looked good. But I'm not a pro scout.

How the Canucks missed his footspeed issues remains a big concern. This is a total failure of pro scouting and hopefully it came down to a single individual who just messed up and didn't do their job (and is now "on probation" so to speak). Because if management made that deal without having anyone in the organization actually watch Clendenning play hockey (or at least speak with someone who had), it's a real problem IMO.

I'm not so concerned about losing Forsling and ultimately I would have been fine moving Forsling (if we'd kept him) with Bonino in the Sutter trade. But it's disappointing to have moved a good prospect (and a steal at the draft) for a player that was never gonna be a fit here (and our pro scouts should have known as much and not signed off on the trade).

What's done is done. But hopefully whoever did the pro scouting on Clendenning has been at minimum reprimanded and ideally reassigned to another portfolio (if not let go entirely).

Wow!  I'm glad we get your inside perspective on the Comets.  I wonder if Drouin has a similar nose out of joint, attitude towards playing in the A?

Curious what Utica fans who post here think about the other Utica coaches other than Travis Green?

Gerrard:

Baumgartner:

I guess my interest is how big a role they play and whether either could succeed Green if he gets a NHL coaching job?

The same staff, I think right down to the equipment people, have basically been here for three years since day one. I don't have a lot of first hand knowledge on this, but the assistants play a pretty big role according to Green, and he is always complimentary. Jerrard has a pretty good resume having coached the Dallas Stars as an assistant. I know Mike Z is high on Jerrard and Baumgartner's contributions. A lot of the players at the lower end of the roster who had other opportunities have said they were anxious to get back to the Comets if they could like Earhardt, Bancks, Hamilton, Archibald. The players say they are always well prepared, practices are well organized and tough. Travis Green is always taking about "the process" and people in Utica say a player isn't getting with "the process" if they are playing poorly so it has seeped into folklore around here.  Hopefully the process stays even if he goes.

Biega and Zalewski have specifically said in interviews that the staff in Utica made the difference for them having more success. Vey may be another one you can point to. His time in Utica didn't hurt him, and I heard from others around here he had some issues with "the process" early on and he found himself on Travis' bench (no idea if that is true or not). He started out centering a line with Kenins and Jensen, getting PP time. Next thing you know he is sitting on the PP and centering the 4th line. Now look at him. He has helped the Canucks and looks to me like he has beat out a surprisingly solid Cracknell.

So there is something good going on and assistants deserve credit too. It will be very interesting to see how Higgins does.  Detroit's perennial AHL captain in Grand Rapids is a solid veteran who not only does it on the ice but handles a lot of the media. When Larkin went up last year for the playoffs he roomed with him. Higgins could be that kind of guy for Utica. I know his family is coming in from the Island for the weekend.

I think Jerrard will be the next head man when Travis leaves, which I hope will not be until 2017.  I haven't met him but word is he is real top notch guy. As a 3 year season ticket holder, one thing I will say is the Comets never mail it in. They compete every game. So that is to Green's credit for sure but the assistants have to be doing a good job too.

At this time one year ago, Adam Clendening was still a Blackhawk. In 12 months, has been a Hawk, Canucks, Penguin, Duck & now Oiler.

Thanks Hobart; As you mentioned both Biega and Zalewski spoke well of the coaching so it made me curious. Two players who could have moved elsewhere but did not. Says something. Vey talked about Linden spending time with him and discussing the 'process'. I think Linden is far more hands on with this team than gets mentioned.

I am still hoping that Green hangs in and moves up to the Canucks in the 2017-18 season. He will have a working knowledge of most of the Canuck youth by that time and a demonstrated ability to develop their games. I will be the end of Desjardin's contract as well. Nothing against Willie but there is something to be said for having a younger coach with young players.

Yet when Willie did similar with Kassian and Baertschi he was attacked on CDC and his coaching methods questioned. The hypocrisy on these boards is overwhelming at times.

And yet Willie was only 3 years younger (55) when he coached the Dallas stars to Calder Cup victory in only his second year there.

Prior to that he almost single handedly resurrected Medicine Hat Tigers from oblivion to 4 Division Titles, 2 Championships and 8 Playoff appearances in 8 years.

Some people had the impression Vey was sulking down here.  I never really saw that, but I heard it took him awhile to get with the program the way Travis wanted.  He won't hesitate to put Carter Bancks in front of you, or a guy like Friesen, who never take a shift off, if he thinks you're dogging it.  That includes the weight room, getting out to charity events, everything.
