Pacific division future centres

Pretty heavy homer bias thinking we'll have 2 or 3 of the divisions best centers.

Also, I don't see Edmonton keeping their core together in 5 years. After the Nurse, Mc Jesus, Drais, Reinhart ELC run out, combined with existing contracts on the books.....good luck with the cap. A new stadium isn't going to fix that looming situation.

I wish we had the problems the oilers have.

I know, their system is pretty stacked. Looking forward though, I predict a sell off of assets before they get good enough as an overall team to be truly elite. Unfortunate irony actually, but I don't know how they can avoid the cap issues which will inevitably occur.

To the topic though, I'm just hoping Horvat can avoid the dreaded sophomore slump, and as for McCann/Cassels, I'm not about to label them as top centers in the division before having played a single pro game.

Um, Kopitar is only 27. Getzlaf 30. Carter. Pavelski. I mean, they are older than all those rooks, but... They're not quite dead yet. Certainly they'll be mentioned as among the top for most of the upcoming decade. This seems like such an HF thread.

Yup. Kopitar and Getzlaf both should be on this list - will likely keep doing it for five years while most of this list tries to grow facial hair.

Nikitin & Purcell at $4.5 mill each come off the books after this year. That's $9 mill which will easily handle Schultz & Klefbom among young guys who will be RFA. And a goalie as Scrivens & Talbot will be UFA. How they handle goaltending will determine their budget, not RFA's.

Korpikoski, Ferrence & Hendricks come off the year after, another $7.6 mill. Yakupov, Leon & Reinhart to re-up. Yak probably wont deserve any big raise, may even be gone. Bridge one of Reinhart & Draisaitl and th okey will be ok.

Mark Faynes $3.6 comes off in 3 years when McDavid is due. May not cover all his raise. But the cap will be up by then. Just how to budget Nurse who will also be due at that time...

The real question is just how they handle goalie budgets and they have a natural succession plan.

I read a interesting article that broke down the contracts, signings and RFA within the oilers system. It's scary how many high prospects and young stars they have and instantly though about how they won't be able to sign all those guys. They have it all figured out

Pretty accurate. We certainly don't have the best offensive centers or best mix of balanced centers though. The Oilers have a perfect mix of skill, size and defence down the middle with McDavid at 1st line center, RNH at 2nd line center and Draisaitl at 3rd line center. However, those top two guys need to be good defensively as well or they'll never win in the playoffs. As we've seen the last 5 years, your top players need to be the best scorers AND defenders on the ice in the post-season to win a Cup.

I'd be worried about the same thing with Calgary's centers. Monahan is a brilliant clutch scorer but not as gritty or well positioned defensively as some of the other guys, and Backlund/Bouma/Jooris etc. aren't really that much better. They could really use a defensive, gritty, PK center. That being said with a star studded defence that good they probably won't need good forward-defence support.

Meanwhile in Vancouver, we've got plenty of them. Lots of great two-way centers with good leadership who come alive in the playoffs, which may not bring us regular season success, but is bound for playoff success. Horvat, Cassels and McCann are all famous for their 2-way abilities. The only issue I have with this is that we may run dry offensively at points in the regular season and if we are to be bounced in the playoffs, it'll be because we struggle to score. Our wingers aren't as elite as some of the others in this league (Baertschi VS Gaudreau for example) so hopefully there is a recent trend in low-scoring, defence-first playoffs.

1. McDavid (EDM)

2. Monahan (CGY)

3. Bennett (CGY)

4. Draisaitl (EDM)

5. Strome (ARZ)

6. Domi (ARZ)

7-9. Horvat, McCann, Cassels (VAN)

So our centers are better then calgarys and Edmontons? Wow you you are delusional. And you say our centers(Horvat, Cassels and McCann) are famous 2 way centers that come alive in the playoffs? Lol you must mean Peewee or minor hockey week because the guys you mentioned have a combined 6 Playoff games and 1 goal.
