[signing] Oduya to Stars

Recommended Posts

SO...essentially Chicago traded Sharp + Oduya + Johns for Daley + Garbutt.

2010 all over again.

No, Oduya was a UFA, not a trade. Blackhawks are still over the cap without Oduya's contract, wonder what they're gonna do still to get below.

Everyone but Tim Murray...

And for good reason. Money usually talks the loudest. This time, sunny weather and a non-bottom 5 team won out. Still can't blame him. Dallas is a team of win now, whereas the Sabres are a team looking to win 2 years down the line.

Good for the Stars

Honestly...I cannot envision a point in time where the canucks will be contending for the playoffs in the west with how the arms races have gone in our division and conference

You aren't kidding.... It's starting to look a bit bleak this season for the Canucks. GMJB needs to make some moves when this season ends.

IMO he needs to make his moves at the trade deadline and then just allow for everyone else to walk should they so desire or cannot be traded.

I just can't see where we fit in to the top 8. The teams that should have regressed based on last years rosters got younger and deeper. The good teams got better and the teams with terrible management got better managers.

And we are maintaining the status quo of 2011/2012. So be it. I wanted this to happen over the last season but the downturn starts this year instead. It's all cyclical unless you're detroit

At least we've picked a good year to be bad if we want defensemen. Including 2017 as well judging by some scouting reports.

Good luck to the west this year

He plans to make splashes in the UFA pool next summer from the sounds of it. That could mean more moves of vets to make space for other players to bridge the gap and still allow younger players to come into the roster, but we'll have to see what he does. I certainly expect more turnover.

The UFA pool was a bit sparse this summer, and we're seeing even fairly good players signing for reasonable amounts. The cap is affecting things in that way, and I'm curious to how this changes next year and if teams will ahve adjusted. With extensions like Kesler and Bieksa's in Anaheim it doesn't look like everyone has learned their lesson, but the UFA market does seem to be taking a hit even if retaining players hasn't gotten any cheaper.

The Oduya signing is good though, should help Dallas a bit as he's not a bad defender at all.

Pardon me if I haven't followed the current crop of dman for 2016 draft, but other than Chychrun, most I've seen are listed 6' and under.

Who else are the standouts?

If we aren't selecting Chychrun, then I'm seriously hoping we select the big Finn Puljajarvi. This kid is big, strong like a bull along the boards and has a decent set of hands and compared to Selanne.

The Bieksa signing was a necessity to facilitate that trade. The Kesler one, although long, is not that surprising. The Western NHL is still dominated by the mentality that strong depth down the middle is an essentiality to win the Cup.

Teams like SJ (Thornton, Couture), LA (Kopitar, Carter), and now ANA (Getzlaf, Kesler) still make it relevant.

As for the UFA market this year, there're still some good pick-ups to be had in guys like Semin, Visnovsky, and Franson. I think Dallas went the Oduya route because of Franson's slightly weaker d-zone play.

Where are they guys listed on the Draft chart? Depending on how bad we are, I'd be happy with just the BPA!

1st overall? Taking Austin Matthews.

Hope the Trader Jim's (Benning and Nill) would discuss about Hammer, he deserves to join a contender to solidify their defense and we could use some good youth coming back to retool well.

That said though, their roster's already pretty full, with 13 forwards and 8 defensemen signed after this deal, plus Johnny could pretty much fill the role that Hammer would've should he be dealt over there.

And when they're still playing at 37/38, how will those contracts look? If they're banking on the cap going up so that it won't matter so much then they haven't learned anything from the lockout. Perhaps they're hoping Kesler will spend more time on IR than playing?

Both have NMCs, and Bieksa's kicks in after he's turned 35 (like the Pronger contract, it's not when it was signed it's when it takes effect). They're both physical players who've dealt with numerous injuries and that'll take a toll on their career longevity. They might seem ok now but this will look worse in a few years.

Well we can send you either Hamhuis or Edler for a good price?

Too old for what the Sabres are trying to do. If only Edler was a few years younger, I'm sure Murray would be willing to trade and pay a very good price for him. If nothing else, GMTM has proven that he makes very fair deals that are very good for both the Sabres and the club that he trades with.
