[Re-Signing] Ryan Kesler with Anaheim

I think the Ducks have 1 more year as a top contender unless they have a breakout younger forward. Their top forwards being over 30 is an issue and their young guys getting paid will give them less ability to add. Hopefully some of their key guys have an off year to ruin their 2016 cup hopes.

Kesler is a known quitter though so he may demand another trade if he doesn't get what he wants.

hahaha that is such a brutal deal. Kesler will be 32 years old when that deal kicks in. With his style of play and the tough miles that he's accumulated , by year 3 that deal is gonna look absolutely awful. I guess if they win a cup they won't care, but damn.

The Anaheim Ducks and Ryan Kesler have agreed to terms on a massive six-year extension worth a reported $41.25 million.

Kesler, 30, was entering his contract year with a cap hit of $5 million in 2015-16, and was set to become a UFA upon the completion of his six-year, $30-million deal he signed in 2010.

The new deal, which comes into effect in 2016-17, will carry a cap hit of $6.875 million through 2021-22.

Kesler tallied 20 goals and 47 points in his first season with the Ducks after leaving the Vancouver Canucks, and played a big part in the team’s deep playoff run with seven goals and 13 points in 16 post-season games.

The big centre has registered 202 goals and 440 points in 736 career games since being drafted by the Canucks in the first round (23rd overall) in 2003.

Kesler plays a game built on intensity. Can he block shots, hit, skate, dangle like he does now, when he's 36? The Sedin have played the same way since they were drafted. They use their brains and hands. They are not big, physical, or fast. They don't kill penalties. They don't play a game that can regress like Kesler's or Burrows'

But their game also lacks the ability to amp up during the playoffs due to the lack of a physical element.

Thank you so much for using apostrophes correctly :D

He was already making $5mil. Not sure why $6.75mil seems astronomical, given what he does. Maybe the term is a bit long, but not shockingly so. If this ends up being an albatross contract for them, they'll likely be rid of it in some way. Happens all the time for the priveledged teams.

Deal must have been impacted by ROR

But good deal for him a little high in my opinion and long term considering his style of play/ injury risk

Anaheim though are serious serious cup contenders this upcoming season

True, but I'm just saying they can sustain longer with their style of play.

As TOML mentioned, part of that lack of a physical element is that other larger, stronger players are that much more likely to take advantage of it and pound them. You think Burrows or Vrbata are going to deter anyone from taking advantage of that?
