[Signing] Oilers re-sign Justin Schultz

Recommended Posts

Oilers sign Justin Schultz — one year, $3.9 million:

The Edmonton Oilers will not be going to arbitration with defenseman Justin Schultz. The two sides have settled on a one-year deal worth $3.9 million, according to Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman.

Schultz, like many of his teammates, had his struggles last season. Though the 25-year-old had six goals and 25 assists in 81 games (his 31 points led all Edmonton d-men), defensively he remained a work in progress.

Case in point, Schultz was a healthy scratch for a game in November after making what former coach Dallas Eakins called a “mind-numbing” change that led to a goal against.

It’s hoped that a new coach in Todd McLellan, plus the addition of veteran defender Andrej Sekera, can help Schultz.

Only last summer, former GM Craig MacTavish opined that Schultz had “Norris Trophy potential.”

seems like quite an overpayment given the circumstances. Edmonton is going to want to start practicing shrewd cap management now if they want to be able to keep their core together. Now if Schultz improves statistically (which he probaly will with a better team) he will be in for quite a payday next year.

So they wanted to bring him to an arbitrator to lower his salary (rumors were they wanted to buy him out), and they give him a raise from his $3.675 million?

Why would they just give him extra money which management would still need to pay to move him, if they don't want him?

How on Earth does this guy get $3.9M? His agent must be a magician.

Boy did we ever dodge a bullet when he spurned us.

Or he could have developed much better in our system rather than being thrown to the wolves in Edmonton. Even an year in the AHL to properly learn defence would have helped him and that's what we were offering.

Meh. One year and $3.9M isn't going to handcuff them at all. Allows him the opportunity to do what he does best and put up even more points with McDavid on the team. Allows the Oilers the opportunity to pad his stats and, should he look out of place and they decide to move on without him, they'll ship him off at the deadline to a team looking for extra scoring punch in the playoffs (ie. Chicago).

He's been bad, but also understand that he's been their top pairing vs the best in the West. Still has huge offensive potential imo, and given the right partner (Sekera?) he could still be a top 10 producer off the back end. Im sure having McDavid and Draisaitl wont hurt either.

Makes me feel better about the Sbisa contract.

Schultz has shown nothing but defensive ineptitude and he's soft as butter. At least Sbisa hits and also shows potential.

Shultz is on a one year deal, if Sbisa's deal was one year I think less of us would be upset.

He is still effective offensively and with the pieces Edmonton is adding his defensive game won't be relied upon as much, Sandis Ozolinsh was much the same way and was quite effective given a more reliable defender could help him out.

Good signing by the Oilers.

Agreed. Term is key here. Schultz gets another opportunity to prove himself (while being paid proven money). If he regresses or stagnates again, they can just walk away from him next year.

Sbisa, who I believe has room to develop yet and could eventually earn his contract, is signed up at proven money for 3 seasons.

I don't like the Sbisa signing because they paid for potential on a player who's ceiling isn't all that high. Reliable top 4 guy is about it. I'm cool with paying for potential sometimes, but i'd like that potential to be top line/top pair/1A goalie.

In Schultz's case, he still has that elite level of offense that could bust out and thus paying for the potential (especially on a 1 year deal) seems reasonable to me.

25, 31pts last year. If this was a Cauck people would be pissed that it wasn't a 5-8 year deal. The kids the real deal and is going to be an amazing defenseman in the next 2-3 years. It's a minor raise, a show me raise. His next deal is going to depend on if he can repeat the points and improve the D.
