Madness
Took Virtanen over Nylander or Ehlers. Boeser was questionable. I sure hope some of his late round picks develop well.
The Weasel
It's quite clear Benning is obsessed with scouting. I mean, what other GM leaves their team during the start of the postseason to go and scout? Make him head scout, fire Weisbrod from this organization and get a competent GM. samurai
I think the person who wrote this article should be applauded for trying to look at the numbers behind Benning's work, but you really can't say anything definitive in terms of him drafting better than other teams unless you run stats and get a significant result. I think the sample size prevents this, however, the main point is correct and that is Benning has a decent track record - in other words the evidence supports him as someone who can find nhl level talent.Again good article - i need to go back and give the person a thumbs up

Rollieo Del Fuego
Good post - (albeit small) - not what I expected either tbh. I was aware he had a good draft record, but expected another chicken little thread. A 66 pick / 6 or 7 year draft span that netted: Miller Roy Pominville Paille Kotalik Gaustad Thorburn Pominville Ballard Wideman Vanek McArthur Sekera Hejda Kaleta is quite successful talent evaluation. what about Pominville... canuktravella
i like our firward prospect crop but defense is lacking and seeing he traded all our picks this yr didnt help our d corps for future
hatedkid666
People will start to love him when all of his moves start to develop. It's like our draft this year, initially everyone was mad and hated it, but after looking into the prospects they realized how many potential steals we got. Canucks fans have no patience

Remy
I'm fine with Benning so please don't take my criticism of this blog post as Benning hate. It isn't. But the most recent year of drafting that's examined in the article is from ELEVEN years ago. I would hope that actually strengthens the argument, and that Benning has, possibly, even improved since then. And I appreciate the article is trying to examine a period that highlights Benning's direct involvement, which can be a murky quality to quantify. But the bottom line is, we just don't know yet. There are way too many variables to consider at this stage when evaluating Benning's drafting. Besides which, most importantly, a lot can happen from this moment on that Benning would not have had the benefit of knowing. He made the best picks he could with the knowledge he had at the time. Just look at Hodgson as a prime example of how this can go badly even though it was a consensus "great pick" at the time. I'd even extend this thought to Sbisa. Remember when Ehrhoff was traded to us from San Jose and some SJ fans were happy about it? I believe their nickname for him was "Error-hoff". Whether it was development, or the right situation, he was a great defenseman for us. It's quite possible that it works out the same with Sbisa. Junkyard Dog
how and why, Boeser is another two way guy, whereas, Konecy is going to be a skilled forward. what about merkley? He's much more offensive than he is defensive, in fact he could use a bit more work defensively. He is definitely a better goal scorer than both Merkley or Konecny. Arguably has one of the best shots in the draft. Is a good skater with a solid frame. Fast skilled goal scorer who competes hard, is strong with the puck and that has room to grow into his solid frame. This is a solid pick

DinoTambo
When the twins are officially off the team and off the books, we can start to judge Benning and co. as we will FINALLY see HIS team. By then the entire 2011 core will be gone and we can FINALLY move on and let the new leadership core (Horvat Cassels Virtanen McCann Tanev Clendenning Hutton Demko, and please please please Chychrun) show us how it's done. Especially in the playoffs. Benning's a good scout through and through, and now he's in charge of OUR scouting and and developing, something myself as a fan have been waiting for for a very, very, very long time. Jason Freaking Herter! Libor freaking Polesek! I've never been more confident in the Canucks' future, and I am really looking forward to the start of the 2018/2019 season when we head into training camp and Canuck mock line ups here on CDC are Sedin-less. Benning's official stamp on this team is gonna take some time.
Bass_Solo
Drafting success is extremely important in building a contending team. That being said, I think we would have been better off hiring Benning as our head of scouting, but there's just no way we would have gotten him if we hadn't offered a GM possession. Only time will tell with JB. Unfortunately, Canucks fans can be very fickle. I hope we give Benning ample time before we drive him out of town.
