elvis15
Blue Jackets draft video shows Leafs offered pick No. 4 for picks No. 8, 34, 38, 58 http://www.pensionplanpuppets.com/2015/7/20/9006441/blue-jackets-draft-video-shows-leafs-offered-pick-no-4-for-picks-no-8 If the Arizona Coyotes didn't take Noah Hanifin, presumably leaving Dylan Strome available for Toronto, the Leafs were interested in moving away from the Mitch Marner selection in order to move back with the Columbus Blue Jackets, according to a video released on Jackets TV. The video shows Blue Jackets general manager Jarmo Kekalainen mulling over a deal that would have sent the fourth overall pick to Columbus in exchange for a first round pick (No. 8) and three second round picks (No. 34, 38, 58). Kekalainen, confident that they can draft Zach Werenski, who he says is "so close" with Noah Hanifin, at eighth overall, decides not to make the move. The picks that would have been involved in the trade ultimately turned into Zach Werenski, Travis Dermott, Paul Bittner and Kevin Stenlund. Had the trade been made, it would have likely meant the Leafs wouldn't have moved back later in the first round to select Dermott, and would have instead also had a shot at taking a player such as Travis Konecny, Nick Merkley or Jeremy Roy with their original 24th overall selection. The video in the link (I can't embed it) explains it better, covering the talks that happened while the earlier teams made their picks. http://video.bluejackets.nhl.com/videocenter/console?id=832424

elvis15
So? If you don't find fly on the wall discussions about potential trades, values and drafting interesting, you don't have to be here you know. I would trade a 4th rounder for an 8th rounder and three 2nd rounders. I thought it would have been obvious - especially if you read past the title - that it was the 4th and 8th overall, not 4th and 8th round (they don't even have the 8th round any more) picks. Thankfully Bill has covered that for me.

Squeak
can someone explain this sentence to me? Not making much sense after multiple reads. I think Toronto was eyeing Strome - if Arizona took Hanifin, then they would've wanted to take Strome. But because Arizona took Strome, the Leafs weren't set on Marner - thus would've been willing to move back and tried to leverage Columbus's need for defensive prospects to get more picks. jdatb
Are you saying you wouldn't trade a 4th for 3 2nds and an 8th? for real. I'm glad he's not our GM.
elvis15
can someone explain this sentence to me? Not making much sense after multiple reads. It was confusing for me too, since Arizona didn't take Hanifin and Toronto didn't want him either, but the video makes sense. Squeak's interpretation is likely correct and it would have been much clearer if it was written properly. Are you saying you wouldn't trade a 4th for 3 2nds and an 8th? *sigh* So I see your post was about as useful as TOML's...

elvis15
It seemed like too much to give for me as well, but they definitely seemed interested in Werenski regardless of having the 8th or higher. We'll see in a few years the difference between Hanifin and Werenski (and maybe a few more for the 2nd rounders) and if it would have been a good deal or not. BanTSN
Without Toronto and their legions of fans, the NHL's off-season would be fairly unentertaining, and there would be not much of a reason to entertain NHL hockey fans in general during the off-season. This can be said about hockey fans in Canada in general. Canadian hockey fans are the best hockey fans. The fact that this video exists is a testament to that. The NHL will continue providing direct access such as this in order to entertain it's fans to the best of their ability, as part of the sports entertainment package they are paying for every season. With technological advances in social media, and the growing desire for people to know everything, there will only be improvements in this regard. It's a really exciting time for Canadian hockey fans.
Dutch_Canuck
For the sake of the blue jackets fan base, I'm glad kekalainen didn't do that deal. That would of been a gross over payment for moving up 4 spots.
Hank Moody
Way too much for 4 spots Especially with the talent that ended up being available in the 2nd Pretty amazing though, you realize the potentially franchise altering decisions these guys have to make in a period of minutes
Tom Sestito
Way too much for 4 spots It's not about the spots as much as it is the players that are available. I agree with that CBJ (scout?) on Werenski only being a small amount away from Hanifin. That being said, Dubas really is a mastermind with value. Those trade downs at the draft were excellent, and this would have been a hell of a trade for the Leafs.
