Update on NHL Expansion

NEW YORK – The National Hockey League today released the following update relative to the NHL expansion application process:

"As previously announced, NHL expansion applications were made available to all potentially interested applicants on July 6. Since that date, we have received requests from, and responded by sending applications to, 16 separate groups/individuals.

The deadline for filing an application and proceeding in the NHL expansion process was last night. We can confirm that we have received two applications: one from Bill Foley for a franchise in Las Vegas, Nevada, and one from Quebecor for a franchise in Quebec City, Quebec.

Our purpose, in initiating the expansion process in the manner we did, was not only to explore the possibility of admitting new members to the NHL but also, at the outset, to set realistic guideposts to distinguish between bona fide expressions of interest (i.e., those which have at least substantial ownership capabilities and an arena or the realistic possibility of an arena) from those indications of potential interest which were, at best, merely hopes or aspirations. Apparently, only Mr. Foley and Quebecor have the confidence in their ability to secure an arena and suitable ownership capability to move forward with this process.

We now intend to focus exclusively on the two expansion applications that have been submitted in accordance with the previously announced process. The process we have outlined for qualified applicants includes at least two more stages of documentation submission. We will provide no further updates until there is something substantive to announce."

Gonna have to find another Western Team if they give both these cities teams.

Columbus will not like that whatsoever. If they didn't mind being in the West they'd be here already.

I don't like Quebec's chances for an expansion franchise. There is just no space in the east with no franchise willing to relocate in the West (Detroit and Columbus hated playing in the West). Going through this process may give them first dibs on a relocation of a team in the east though (cough, Florida, cough).

Honestly most of the East teams need to stay the way they are. Personally I'd rather see a team in Vegas and Seattle, but it isn't looking good for Seattle with getting an arena.

I think Las Vegas will do well due to the large amount of Canadian travelers that will go there, however, I do not think that they will be able to build a solid fanbase unless the team does well, being the only major team will help but I just don't think there should be a team there.

Well if you look at a map, their complaining is justified. Columbus is only 3 hours from Pittsburgh and just over 3 hours to Detroit. So having them in the West is a dumb idea to begin with.

The NHL just needs to stop being so secretive about expansion OR don't make the application process public at all.

Put two more teams in the west (Seattle and Vegas). Relocate Florida to Quebec.

Plus relocate Arizona (it's Phoenix...it will always be Phoenix...live with it) look at OKC, Portland, etc.

Portland would be a great option as well.

Vegas and Quebec City have reached Phase 3 of the expansion process. Can someone tell me by the way how the expansion draft would exactly work?

Based off of the 2000 expansion, each team is allowed to protect either one goaltender, five defensemen, and nine forwards or two goaltenders, three defensemen, and seven forwards.

The remaining players will be available to be picked by Quebec and Las Vegas.

That's not really fair for the other teams - or the free agents that are looking for a team.

I've never thought that QC would be an expansion over a relocation but it might happen.

My guess would be that it's because they believe that the potential ownership in Seattle isnt willing to pay the full expansion fee. In that case the BoG would absolutely take QC's money. They're banking on that $1B.

Dat alignment though....

Granted there were 26 teams protecting players instead of 30. I wouldn't be surprised if things got changed up a bit.

2 teams, Atlanta and Nashville, were exceptions as they were fairly new rosters. Their rosters were protected.
