[Speculation] Ehrhoff would take 1-year deal, CBJ kicking tires.

Recommended Posts

Ehrhoff’s agent, Rick Curran, told PHT in an email that the 33-year-old unrestricted free agent “doesn’t mind having the flexibility of a single year commitment. He’s confident in his ability to provide a valued role to the right team. If there’s a mutual fit, an extension will likely follow.”

NBC Sports.

Sources have told The Dispatch that the Blue Jackets and free agent defenseman Christian Ehrhoff have had discussions, and that a deal could come together if Ehrhoff sits on the market long enough for his price to come down.

Put another way: if Ehrhoff stays jobless long enough to get nervous, he could significantly lower his asking price to make sure he has a chair when the music stops.

It only makes sense that the Blue Jackets would have interest in Ehrhoff, despite the fact that injuries limited him to 49 games last season with Pittsburgh. He's a power-play defenseman, which the Blue Jackets appear to need, especially following the trade of James Wisniewski last March.

May flashback:

Curan tells me that yes, Vancouver would be 1 of the teams Ehrhoff has interest in signing with on July 1st. #Canucks

I still really think Jim Benning should bring him back on a 1 or 2 year deal, and trade him at a deadline. He'll still gel with the PP here, IMO.

That's what it's all about right now, getting draft picks.

The more vets we have on expiring contracts the better.

His natural chemistry with the Sedins would likely boost his value again, and who knows maybe he fetches a 2nd round pick at the deadline.

That is one serious way to look at it for sure. short deal mid level return in a benning happy draft

Imagine the outrage in CT if we did that. "WTF BENNING YOU SAY YOUTH MOVEMENT AND THEN SIGN VETS!!!!"

Exactly. Not unlike the Radim Vrbata or Jan Bulis deals of the past: sign with the Canucks to play with the Sedins, boost your own value and maybe the Canucks get something in return.

If he's so openly OK with a 1-year deal, then a short-term deal would benefit both parties. Everyday I am sure he is feeling a bit more desperate.

It's really hard to see this happening for the Canucks. They have 8 d-men that they can't send down to Utica already signed so if they signed Erhoff they'dneed to clear space for him. I'm sure each one of us can name someone on the roster we'd love to move to make space, but it's hard to see it actually happening.

Would have to make other D moves to even contemplate him fitting here now.

And sure, we could probably sell him at the deadline for some pick but he might also help push us higher in the standings enough that we'd make those cursed playoffs and miss out on that high pick we're working towards

CBJ would actually be a good fit for him....they should be pretty scary this season if they can stay healthy and pull it together.

The only thing that makes sense is signing him to trade him in March. I doubt he wants to sign on a team like the Canucks who will not be CUP contenders anyways. If he has to cut his asking price to get a contract at least do it for a team with a legit CUP chance.

He signed with Buffalo for a cup chance. Clearly it's not as high up on his list as some players.

Playing for Vancouver would actually be a smart business decision for him. He had his best seasons here, and would likely boost his value playing with the Sedins.

Then he could sign one last decent contract before he retires.

Definitely makes sense for both the Canucks and Ehrhoff right now (or even later on in the off-season).

Hopefully the price is fair for both parties and once the Trade Deadline rolls around, he'll see which team(s) are contenders and move on to that organization, in hopes of earning/inking that last "career" contract, and we benefit from another 2016 draft pick.

I'm getting a kick out of the Ehrhoff situation. He badly wanted out of his Buffalo contract so he could play for a contender. Now that the Sabres traded away Zadorov, they are looking for a left handed defenceman.

He's now a semi-unwanted player in the league that is looking for a contract at a fraction of what he would have been making had he stayed with the Sabres.

He had it made in the shade with both the Canucks and the Sabres. He's learning the hard way that the grass isn't always greener on the other side. The Sabres sucked with and without him, but he sure could have made a difference in Vancouver.

But hey, he still wants his immediate chance at the Stanley Cup. *snicker*

He'd fit nicely in Columbus. I just don't think he's got the offence anymore to be good enough for the Canucks. If we were to sign someone, might as well be Franson who is still young and can bring it. Ehrhoff is 33, has injury issues and is MUCH slower than people remember during his 50 point seasons. Plus he's a naturally left handed defenceman and we have Edler, Hamhuis, Bartowski and Sbisa locked in for next season.

Sign him, waive Weber, and trade Ehrhoff for picks at the deadline. Ehrhoff brings everything Weber does only he's actually an NHLer.

So Weber's 11 goals and 21 points doesn't qualify him to be an actual NHLer compared to Ehrhoff who had 3 goals and 14 points. Granted he was injured but pro-rated to 82 games and Weber would still have produced more than Ehrhoff
