NucksCelts
http://www.tsn.ca/penguins-sign-gonchar-to-tryout-contract-1.345528 Penguins have signed defenceman Sergei Gonchar to a professional tryout contract. Gonchar, 41, scored one goal and 13 assists in 48 games with the Montreal Canadiens last season. Originally selected 14th overall at the 1992 NHL Entry Draft by the Washington Capitals, the Russian defender has scored 220 goals and 591 assists in 1,301 career NHL games with the Capitals, Canadiens, Penguins, Ottawa Senators and Dallas Stars. He won the Stanley Cup in 2009 during his previous tenure with the Penguins. Named to the NHL Second All-Star Team in 2001-02 and 2002-03, Gonchar is the NHL's active points leader among defencemen and is fifth amongst all active NHLers in games-played. He has represented Russia on numerous occasions internationally, including four Olympic Games, winning silver at Nagano 1998 and bronze at Salt Lake City 2002. He also won a silver (2010) and bronze (2007) medal at the IIHF World Championships in addition to participating in the 1996 and 2004 World Cups of Hockey. Baer.
Probably the best post lockout defensemen behind Lidstrom. Great career in Washington and Pittsburgh. I was too young to remember him with the Caps bug his sensational play in the mid 2000s with the Pens I will always remember.
Odd.
Would prefer him on our back-end than most players on our d.
NucksCelts
Would prefer him on our back-end than most players on our d. Is that why all he can get is a PTO? I am so glad you're not our gm.
R3aL
I wish he was younger and we could sign him and use him to get Trymakin arse over to N Amurica. Hope he makes the pens would be pretty cool
hatedkid666
Don't think he will make it. Unless he wants to be playing in the AHL. Too old, too slow

Chris
One of the few Russian players with heart, I've always been a big Gonchar fan, Hopefully, if he still has some gas left; he and Letang can bring back some of the magic they once had. -AJ-
He would be perfect as either a 5/6 guy or an incredible leader in the AHL.

SaintPatrick33
He can still be a decent PP specialist, playing limited minutes per game. Thats why the Habs signed him last year. On the PP he doesnt have to skate or be physical, just use his vision, passing and great shot ability. IMO we could get him on the cheap and use him on our PP unit, he is still better than what we got for PP point men.

Could it get worse?

He has to earn a spot. He played last year, it's not THAT far fetched. He's not the player he once was though. He also isn't the peice of the puzzle to the cup either. DownUndaCanuck
He would be a fantastic mentor for all those puck movers in Pittsburgh, Pouliot in particular. He will need a mentor and guide, and I don't think an injured Letang for half the season will cut it.
