[PTO] Devin Setoguchi with Leafs

Recommended Posts

Maple Leafs bringing in Devin Setoguchi on PTO:

The Toronto Maple Leafs have signed veteran forward Devin Setoguchi to a professional tryout (PTO) contract, according to Sportsnet 590 The Fan’s Matt Brown.

Setoguchi will attend the team’s training camp in September in an effort to make his fifth NHL team. He suited up 12 times for the Calgary Flames last season and played 19 games with the Adirondack Flames in the American Hockey League.

The 28-year-old was taken eighth overall by the San Jose Sharks in the epic 2005 NHL Draft. In 471 career NHL games, the Taber, Alta, native has 127 goals and 122 assists split between the Sharks, Minnesota Wild, Winnipeg Jets and Flames.

Rumours began to swirl earlier this month that Setoguchi was in talks with the Leafs.

While going through camp on a PTO isn’t the easiest way for a player to crack an NHL roster, it does happen. In 2013, the Leafs signed Mason Raymond to a PTO and he ended up notching 19 goals, 45 points in 82 games with the team.

He'd fit in well with all the other cast-offs the Leafs have signed (Parenteau, Arcobello, Matthias, Winnik) and who knows? If they gel they might even compete well, since the group they have there with J.v.R., Bozak, Lupul, Kadri, Rielly, Nylander, Kapanen, etc. has decent potential (the Panthers won a division title couple years ago when they signed Campbell, Kopecky, Versteeg and bunch of other UFA's).

anything can happen in the east. Its like a daycare over there compared to the warzone if the west.

The trade that brought the Sharks Brent Burns for Setoguchi and a late first looks like a fleecing right about now...I agree with other posters that this guys career has fallen like a rock.

Yup, although the Wild also got Charlie Coyle who is turning out to be a decent depth scorer but the draft pick didn't pan out to much (Zach Philips later traded for Jared Knight, both AHLers)

Glenn Campbell @CTVGCampbell

Taking advantage of a 2nd chance. Devon Setoguchi says he's gone to rehab, been clean and sober for 5 months, close to signing with #leafs

Maybe having rehab behind him will allow him to focus on hockey and get back to playing well. Either that or he'll have trouble competing while sober, but no harm in giving him PTO. If he's turned it around personally, here's hoping he does so professionally as well.

Leafs are taking 1-year flyers on all sorts of vets. Basically setting up a "Trade Deadline Rental Shop".

QFT!

But while you don't have the good young players to infuse into your roster; why not?

(We're even there to a lesser extent, quite evidently in JB's eye's anyway.)

I'll go with Cherry on this one. It's the teal.

That never looked good. I was blown away.
