These trades don't make it easier for my team.

Once again - always a pleasure to work with Cap'n - who we think found a good balance in this deal - one that should help both sides.

The Isles would like to thank Lars, Marc and Paul, and wish them and Cap'n the best in a potential playoff run.

We are really happy to acquire David Backes and TVR in this deal.  We gave up a few very good playoff assets to do so - but received likewise in return and most importantly for us, we consider David the top 6 C we've been looking for.  He got off to a slow start this year, but he's not the type of player to idle for long, and with 4 pts in his last 5 games, looks like he might be back on track.

Trevor also brings a huge, comparable presence to the departing Marc Methot - playing 22, 23, 24 minutes a night on a contender - bound to decrease when Keith returns, but nevertheless indicative of what JQ thinks of him.   We consider Trevor an important part of our blueline moving forward and if any of his upside should emerge at the NHL level, we feel we've taken a reasonable, lateral move in this deal while our veteran blueline gets a bit younger in the process.

We also welcome a couple decent B prospects to our thin AHL group - we think both Connor and Mitch stand a reasonable chance of earning careers at the NHL level - Connor being an excellent playmaker, while Mitch brings a solid amount of grit with respectable skill to the table.

Best of luck to Cap'n and the Sharks.

(We leave it to Monty - and imagine he can if he tries - to make up the ground lost in SJ's addition of Gaustad in this deal...which is otherwise close to a fantasy point wash...:P)

[edit - the Isles are flattered - we'd assumed this would be a concern to Monty due to the way it strengthens a contending team he's chasing - if he considers us a threat, we are hereby honored, but not sure we've earned that yet.]

How so?

The Jets have a comfortable enough spot that they can afford a few months of having no production from Schwartz. By the time he gets back, Winnipeg will still be in a playoff spot. And the Jets, who won it all last year, get a very good pool player on a playoff team. Duchene doesn't help him in the playoffs, as there is no way the Avs make it this year.

As for the Isles, his team is performing much better than I expected. Getting Backes is a win all around. And TVR plays for the Hawks, so that's a win.

When it comes to standings, I don't care who finishes first, nor do I care where teams in the West finish. My primary concern is Eastern teams, where I stack up against them, and is my team strong enough once the playoffs begin (if I'm good enough to get in) to overtake those teams.

The East just got a hell of a lot more competitive.

RFA OFFERSHEET:

The Carolina Hurricanes have sent an offersheet to Anthony Stolarz of the Ottawa Senators.

3 years, 800K per year

The Senators have 48 hours to match the offersheet or take the compensation (nothing)

Has been 48 hours and offer has not been matched.

The Carolina Hurricames are absolutely thrilled and formally welcome Anthony Stolarz to the organization. Splitting starting goaltending IRL for the Flyers affiliate, the former 2nd round selection in 2012 is the Flyers top goaltending prospect in the system. The 6'6" beast is a good bet as a future starter for the Flyers.

There are a number of prospects I have had my eye on since joining the Hurricanes in February, Stolarz is a guy I've wanted since the very beginning, and he joins a list of guys like Ehlers, Pulock, Honka, Bowey, Williams, Panarin, and Quine to be, what I hope is a very deep franchise in the coming years.

FIRE SALE IN MINNY

It is underway. Since overtaking Minnesota just before the season, we believed we were going to have a rebuild from the get-go and while a decent start has Minnesota 21st in the league, achieving results better than we anticipated looking at our roster, we aren't happy with raking in playoff revenue ala the IRL Canucks. We want results...we don't want to be mediocre and have a 'hope' to make some noise in the playoffs, we need confidence heading into the postseason that we can challenge any team in the league. We don't have that confidence.

PLAYERS ON THE BLOCK

Brent Seabrook

  • 82 CDCFL points
  • On Chicago, a top contender
  • impending FA but you will have him for near a full season - beat the TDL rush on impending FA's
  • Can retain cap for the season (has caphit of 5.8M), for the right price

Andrew Ladd

  • 68 CDCFL points
  • On a potential playoff team but a great producer to help get your team in the CDCFL playoffs - WPG has good shot to make them
  • 4.4M caphit, unlikely to retain for such a good producer at that caphit but will if it garners bigger return
  • Impending FA, but will have him for essentially entire season...once again, beat the TDL rush for these type of additions

David Desharnais

  • 81 CDCFL points
  • On Montreal, legit top contender
  • Legitimate 3C - MTL was playing him above his abilities and is now producing better than ever in a role he excels in
  • 3.5M caphit, but will retain some to bring a better return

Scottie Upshall

  • 23 CDCFL points
  • Solid depth player
  • Impending FA, so will be a rental player...good to have for a playoff run
  • On STL, a good choice to make the playoffs

Cam Ward

  • 60 CDCFL points
  • Impending FA so can let him walk at end of year, will retain cap for better return
  • Splitting starts in Carolina
  • Good piece to help your CDCFL team push for playoffs, or secure a spot

Looking for young roster players, prospects and/or picks.

WILL CONSIDER OTHER PLAYERS, BUT THOSE THAT AREN'T MENTIONED, ARE NOT MENTIONED FOR A REASON. WILL TAKE AN OVERPAYMENT TO GET THEM, MORE THAN LIKELY.

We have a trade to announce...

To CBJ: Cam Talbot, CHI 2016 3rd Round Pick
To NYI: Erik Gudbranson, Jacob Markstrom, Lucas Lessio, Martin Frk

Thanks to winterhawks - it's been a fun negotiation that has been ongoing since July 1st...

We were really reluctant to let go of Cam - with what appears like the inevitable rise of the Coilers, he could very well be a premier asset in this league next year or thereafter - and we liked the certainty of having a starter and a young goaltender competing as a tandem.

However, with Jake Allen playing the kind of hockey he has, it looks as though as opposed to being part of a tandem, he may very well be emerging and locking himself in as the starter in St Louis.  Under the circumstances, we felt it's inappropriate to retain two goaltenders playing night in and night out so we elected to move Cam and to bring in a backup and add some depth that we felt we needed.   Jacob Markstrom was extremely high on our list of coveted backups - we love his potential and he fits our timeline extremely well.

We're also pleased to add Erik Gudbranson, who gives us another young fixture on our blueline and enables us to not rely upon young guys who are still waiting and working to command NHL minutes, as well as the addition of young forward prospects Lucas and Martin to our thin AHL group.  With this move we now have a couple of  D pairings and F lines at the AHL level that we hope to draw upon for depth - adding a couple players that we feel are approaching NHL readiness and may be able to play a role for us in the near future.

We wish Cam, winterhawks and the CBJ all the best moving forward.

We have a trade to announce...

To LAK: Karri Ramo
To FLA: LAK 2016 4th Round Pick

We are happy to add Ramo for such a low cost. There are rumours that Hiller's injury could be more serious than first thought. Also, even though Kari's stat line is terrible, it is far better than Hiller or Ortio's. So the problem seems to have been team defense, which they seem to be sorting out.

So there is a real chance that Ramo could be starting the majority of the games for Calgary going forward, and that they will be winning them more often.
