-Vintage Canuck-
Budaj to attend Kings training camp: report: Goalie Peter Budaj signed a professional tryout contract with the Los Angeles Kings on Friday and will attend training camp, according to LAKingsInsider.com. Budaj will compete with Jhonas Enroth to be Jonathan Quick's backup this season. The 32-year-old spent last season with the St. John's Ice Caps, then the Winnipeg Jets' American Hockey League affiliate. In 19 games he was 0-9-6 with a 3.55 goals-against average and .888 save percentage. Budaj was selected by the Colorado Avalanche in the second round (No. 63) in the 2001 NHL Draft. In nine seasons with the Avalanche and Montreal Canadiens, he is 124-107-33 with 11 shutouts, a 2.76 GAA and a .903 save percentage in 296 regular-season games and 0-2 in seven Stanley Cup Playoff games. http://www.nhl.com/ice/news.htm?id=777817

VanGnome
Often times the recipients of PTOs go on to sign contracts with other teams in the league. If anything, this is healthy competition to push Enroth, nothing more, nothing less.
Ilya Mikheyev
Teams usually have an extra goalie(s) at training camp. Budaj sucked last year, but has extensive NHL experience and a season before that was a back-up NHL goalie with a winning record. He's not gonna be that much worse than guys that teams bring from college, junior or low pro leagues, etc. He's also not gonna land a contract with L.A. (or probably any other team) unless he has an unbelievable training camp. If he does have a lights out training camp, it wouldn't surprise me if the Canucks thought about him for Utica/K-Wings as an insurance policy if Cannata or Bachmann get hurt (or Markstrom or Miller and one of the former get called-up). Budaj played well for Hershey when Jerrard was there, who is now an assistant coach for Utica. Most likely Budaj will go to Europe, IMO.
CALGARY!
There plan is to pump up his stats behind their suffocating defense and then trade him at the deadline for a big overpayment by some team with a goalie injury
Lionized27
If I could afford Budaj's agent maybe I could get a PTO as well? Anyone have his digits?
