Next James Bond May Be Black - Actor Idris Elba

From MSNBC:

Idris Elba is often mentioned as an ideal candidate to succeed Daniel Craig as James Bond, but the latest author of the spy franchise says the black actor may be “too street” to pull off 007’s suave style.

In an interview with British tabloid the Daily Mail promoting the latest Bond thriller, “Trigger Mortis,” author Anthony Horowitz said he thought of Elba as a “terrific actor,” but he had other black actors in mind who would better fit the bill.

“For me, Idris Elba is a bit too rough to play the part. It’s not a colour issue. I think he is probably a bit too ‘street’ for Bond. Is it a question of being suave? Yeah,” Horowitz told the Daily Mail.

Rumors that Elba could be tapped as the first black man to take his martinis shaken, not stirred, gained strength last year after leaked emails exposed Sony Pictures Entertainment executives musing that he could be fit to step into Bond’s shoes. (Elba has since said he’s not interested in the gig.)

Never heard of Idris Elba before.

Will a black actor help or hurt the James Bond franchise? Daniel Craig say Spectre may be his last James Bond role so producers are looking for the next Bond.

Hurt big time, people don't like when you mess with iconic characters, whats next, a black Sherlock Holmes? Robin Hood? King Arthur? Superman? How about instead of jamming black actors into tradionally white roles, create an ORIGINAL CHARACTER with and ORIGINAL STORY.

Really: black, white, or whatever, Bond needs to behave cool, be tough, and love the ladies. I read the books, and at no time did I read Bond was a white person.

In Casino Royale Vesper Lynd remarks, "Bond reminds me rather of Hoagy Carmichael, but there is something cold and ruthless." Likewise, in Moonraker, Special Branch Officer Gala Brand thinks that Bond is "certainly good-looking ... Rather like Hoagy Carmichael in a way. That black hair falling down over the right eyebrow. Much the same bones. But there was something a bit cruel in the mouth, and the eyes were cold.

All that I require is a British accent and we're good. The skin can be black, pinkish-brown, dark-brow, browny-red, yellowy, it doesn't matter to me. I need general badassery, charisma and cool technology. Idris Elba works for me, or Chiwetel Ojiofor would be even better IMO. I really like the Tom Hardy suggestion above as well.

If he does as well as this it's fine.

But honestly they've changed The Equalizer character of Robert McCall to Denzel Washington. There was no point in calling it the Equalizer because it didn't copy anything from the series. I just don't think they should be changing characters just to be PC. Make a separate spy series with a black actor, that's different that James Bond.

If it's done because the actor is awesome sure.

Compare this.

With this.

There was no point in calling it the Equalizer. The characters were totally different.

Good find. Your memory is a lot better than mine. If that's the case, why was there just a blond haired blue eyed Bond?

I don't think it matters.

People get angry over castings all the time even beyond race. Superhero movies for example seem to have an extreme amount if hate towards almost every casting it seems (including Heath Ledger as Joker).

At the end of the day though if the script is well written and the actor/actress portrays the role in character well then people get over it and praise it.
