Ossi Vaananen
But don't you find it hypocritical that he was calling out CDC for thinking they know better than scouts, when he was one of those very same people? He talks about others being arrogant, but he was making the exact same statements at the time of the draft. Lol you're not wrong. He seems to just be reactionary and try to get pluses from people. His stance constantly changing, yet some appreciate his posts.
DeNiro
This is just too funny. Clearly the scouts knew something I didn't. I never claimed Brisebois was a better or worse pick like some people. I claimed that I wasn't excited about the pick because defensemen from the Q can be risky. Therefore making the other picks safer. That statement was also made right after the pick before Pilon fell to the 5th round. At which point I realized there's red flags surrounding the guy. The point I was making was that people were calling this Bennings biggest mistake of the draft even after Pilon fell. If you look at my other posts instead of just singling out one, you'd see that I was also saying to trust Benning and the scouts beause they know more than we do. Canuck Surfer
^ An accountable come clean statement. Good job DeNiro! ^ Wonder if Pilon will resurface after some time off? Obviously a raw, but notable talent...

You blew the call on Pilon/Brisebois, but why do you feel compelled to defend your call, especially when you didn't have the inside scoop? Even the pro scouts have low success rates, so at the end of the day, no one really gives a rats @$$ if some random hockey geek on cyberspace makes a wrong call every once in awhile. And wrong/right is subjective in these parts.

And wrong/right is subjective in these parts. I just wanted to make clear the context of what I said. It was nothing against Brisebois, I personally am just not a fan of picking D-men from the Q. At least not in the first 3 rounds. We obviously can't have all the information on these guys that the scouts have, so at our pick Pilon and Vande Sompel appeared to be the safer pick just based on stats and rankings. I would never say that about Pilon after he fell to the 5th round though. That to me screamed red flag, yet some people still argued we should have taken him. KeslerPlaysLikeACanadian
none of us knew this was a possibility so it's reasonable to wonder why we wouldn't be taking a chance on him. Personally, I'm keenly aware that this and a million other things are possibilities, which is why I don't like the way that some posters sound so certain about a player's future. At the same time, I've watched guys like Sutter play in the actual league and I find it easy to make bold predictions there. The same as Sbisa - he has not reached his potential and I think he will get better over the next three years. A lot of posters seem unfamiliar or unwilling to go out on a limb about an NHLer, and yet they'll tell you that some junior player is a better prospect than another. I don't get that. RRypien37
This isn't the first won't be the last case like this. Willing to bet he takes a year off and comes back. Probably just needed a mental break or a reality check realize how amazing of a life he could potentially have versus being stuck in the rat race working a 9-5 like most. DeltaSwede
Reality is that not all athletes love their jobs like people expect them to do. I find it frustrating when highly talented players "give up" so to say when there are so many people that would do anything to be in that position, but that is me being selfish. It couldn't have been an easy decision and I am almost certain there is more to the story than losing love for the game. Social issues, perhaps substance abuse who knows and who are we to really question it. Even though it makes me a bit sour, it's his decision and I hope he doesn't live to regret it and wish him luck in the future.
TheHitman
He probably told the teams that he was thinking about leaving the NHL. Islanders picked him in hopes of him changing his mind later down the line.
Comet Fan 0727
Lol people were practically calling for Bennings head for not picking him. Maybe... just maybe... the potential for him leaving came up in some pre-draft interviews? Maybe NHL GMs knew something people on CDC didn't? I find that hard to believe. Most of the cdc ers know way more than the paid professionals.

Maybe 9 to 5 and a normal life is what someppl prefer than all the media and fan scrutiny. Even if hockey is the sport we all love, it's usually the things on the side that turns ppl off. I love hockey as much as anyone but having that much spotlight...I would have to think about it.

This is only the case for Canadian teams and a select few US ones. In 75% of the US based team locations you wouldn't get noticed walking down the street. As far as 75 percent of U.S based teams and not being recognized...that's debatable.
