Lightning invite goalie Emery to training camp: report:

Free agent goalie Ray Emery will attend Tampa Bay Lightning training camp on a professional tryout contract, the Tampa Bay Times reported Tuesday.

Backup Andrei Vasilevskiy is expected to be out 2-3 months after having surgery Sept. 3 to remove a blood clot from near his left collarbone. Emery, 32, is expected to compete with Kristers Gudlevskis, who appeared in one game for the Lightning in the 2013-14 season, for the backup job behind starter Ben Bishop.

In 31 games with the Philadelphia Flyers last season, Emery was 10-11-7 with a 3.06 goals-against average and .894 save percentage. In 11 NHL seasons with the Ottawa Senators, Flyers, Anaheim Ducks and Chicago Blackhawks, Emery is 145-86-28 with a .906 save percentage and a 2.70 GAA in 287 games.

His best season was in 2012-13 with the Blackhawks when he went 17-1-0 in 21 regular-season games and was the backup to Corey Crawford as the Blackhawks won the Stanley Cup.

The Lightning also reportedly have invited center Ryan Martindale to a camp on a tryout contract. Martindale, 23, had eight goals and 14 points in 19 games last season with Syracuse, the Lightning's American Hockey League affiliate. A 2010 third-round pick (No. 61) of the Edmonton Oilers, he has not played an NHL game.

I saw that yesterday, and apparently Bishop is still recovering from his injury so it's possible they don't have either goalie from last year on their roster opening night. Emery's an insurance policy for Bishop as much as he is a normal PTO to push their depth.

That's an interesting point actually, I nearly forgot about Bishop's injury. Where did you hear that he is still isn't fully recovered?
