Vancouver Canucks head coach Willie Desjardins underwent hip surgery and will miss training camp, the team announced Wednesday.

Desjardins had the surgery to address a pre-existing hip condition. The 58-year-old is expected to miss the Young Stars tournament and training camp, but should return in time for opening night.

"Willie has been dealing with the chronic discomfort for a long time and our medical staff has been monitoring it since he joined us last year. Unfortunately his hip deteriorated rapidly in recent weeks and it required immediate attention," general manager Jim Benning said. "Willie's expected to recover quickly and will be connected every day until he's ready to be back in person."

Canucks assistant coaches Doug Lidster, Glen Gulutzan, and Perry Pearn will share coaching duties in Desjardin's absence.

Thoughts on how this will affect the season?

(Get well soon Willie!)

I can't imagine that it's going to affect the season at all. It's his hip that had surgery, not his brain.

Hope the hip heals well, Willie! Not sure if it was a hip replacement as none of the articles announcing this have gone into any detail (his walking gait last season seems to bear out the hip replacement thought) but recovery is slow and steady. Doesn't matter if he's pacing or not.....he'll be there!

I am sure he will make one practice towards the end of training camp. Wouldn't surprised me if the club video tape the practice and sent it to Willie. He will be in contact with the assistants for sure. So many other options to keep him in touch as well. Not the end of the world and really don't think it will matter a lot.

Get well soon WIllie!

I think it will only help the young prospects chances of potentially making the team

Yes of course the decision would not be made until the regular season when willy is back

But willy has shown little trust in youth so maybe a couple young players could get some NHL games that they otherwise might not have

Some players just need a chance

Best wishes to Desjardins for a successful surgery and a speedy recover.

As for the OP question, I agree with the consensus view that this will have zero effect on the season.

It's pretty much standard operating procedure for head coaches to delegate camp to their assistant coaches and staff (plus various management liaisons). Willie will still get updates and reports and can work on off ice preparations and planning. This is pretty much what half the other head coaches will be doing anyway (even without going under the knife).

Really? He had a rookie (Bo Horvat) as his third time centre and Vey another rookie as his 4th. Not to mention giving Keins a chance. It seems like every coach the Canucks have gets critized for not giving "the kids a chance", maybe NHL coaches realize everyone has to earn their spot rookie or not.
