Daryl Hall & John Oats - Private Eyes

The contrast between the last two tracks and this one in the mix is pretty funny to me for some reason haha. When I was younger, one of my parents used to play this song all the time. I don't remember which one, but it's one of those songs for me that has become "oh my god, turn that off" every time I hear it because it got overplayed so badly. 1/10 for that fact (5/10 in a less biased rating).

Bryan Adams - Heaven

I'm like 99% sure this was my parents' wedding song, and they're divorced. I also hate Bryan Adams, so I'm going to be forced to give it a heavily unfair 0/10.

No worries bruv.

Like I said at the beginning, we just really have different tastes in music. The scores I've given the songs are definitely relative to my own tastes, because I honestly wouldn't tell you that any of them are awful. I just wouldn't listen to them. I might actually check out SPZRKT though, because I really enjoyed his song on the mix. The Unglued song was also pretty cool, so there's that.

I appreciate the opportunity to hear some things I've never heard before though! Thanks to whoever submitted this mix, and hopefully you don't take my tastes personally!

Gut feeling says this was Horvat's mix.

Won't take it personally haha. SPZRKT is amazing, his old stuff is okay, his newer stuff is absolutely brilliant though. Although, there goes my music mix secret weapon. Glad you like Unglued, I'm really into that song too.

Will post my mix later.

Busdriver - Imaginary Places

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JEHc4u-1QIk

I have never liked Busdriver. Don't like his delivery, and I don't really like the sound of his voice - and in this case, the words just don't resonate with me at all either ("kids... if you want to piss off your parents...") -- that said, I don't think it's bad or anything. the production works well with his vocals, and he obviously goes all-in. It's just not MY thing.

5/10

Flying Lotus - Turkey Dog Coma

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y0pMbNw1usk

I love Flying Lotus, and I legitimately think he's a genius of contemporary music. That said, this isn't my fav song of his, not really close to it. Still like it tho.

7.5/10

Scale the Summit - Atlas Novus

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q0kUpcCSzn8

Thundercat - Song for the Dead

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BOAkaZPCnGg

Scale the Summit; Liked the guitar tones (sounded like Explosions in the Sky towards the end), but didn't feel much else for this track after listening twice. Not bad though, just not something I'd listen to very often. 5.5/10

Despite loving FlyLo so much, I've never really checked out Thundercat. Was excited to hear this when I saw it listed. I really liked it. not particularly catchy or anything, but I really dig the soulful sound. 8/10 - definitely something I'll look more into

For Shad, I liked the music, wasn't crazy on any of the vocals. lyrics didn't move me at all. It was definitely tolerable tho. 5.5/10

as for Sisyphus: huge Sufjan fan, but I never bothered with Sisyphus for some reason. didn't like this at first, but by the end I was so confused, and I think I kind of love it. 9/10

Open Mike Eagle - Bright Green Light

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1OhobMZupEA

no idea what I think about this. hated it the first time, thought it was okay the second time. just not my thing.

4/10

El-P is good. has a classic sound, but very obviously does more 'abstract' or alternative stuff with his influences. white dude in the black man's game who doesn't sound like he's only trying to appeal to white people. how can you not respect that?

8/10

DJ Shadow - Building Steam with a Grain of Salt

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dcxsheROd3E

Austronautalis - The River, The Woods

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7wrua_0IOSA

k-os - Crabbuckit

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MtSzpKiARrI

DJ Shadow song doesn't even really need any discussion imo. obviously one of the best instrumental hip hop tracks of all time. ez 10/10

Unlike El-P, this Austronautilus guy sounds about as white as humanly possible. Hate that "whoa-oh" stuff that so many musicians pop into their songs. I dunno, this just sounded like an angry teen's song to me. Maybe I woulda liked it when I was 15-18 years old or something, but I really wasn't digging this at all. 1/10

as for K-OS, i forgot this dude exists. I mean, it's a jaunty, cute song. but I'm not buying it. it sounds like A Tribe Called Quest if they grew up in the suburbs. catchy tune, but doesn't move me much. 5/10

----

as for who made the mix, I have absolutely no clue. I'm sorta thinking it may have been Banana Mash, because he's like 15 years old and had that RTJ sig for a long time, so I know he likes El-P. but my original guess was Kaz, even though I have no idea what he likes

Imma just guess Banana Mash

I knew the Run the Jewels sig would give it away if you got the mix.

Totally agree on you assesment of Astronautalis by the way. I was really curious to see what someone else would think of him, because my cousin was trying to sell his music to me as the best thing ever. I was not sold on it.

If you get a chance, check out the Sisyphus album. It's definitely hit and miss, but I thought it was pretty cool overall. Like the song I posted a lot of it is really confusing.

Oliver Heldens & Shaun Frank - Shades of Grey (Ft. Delaney Jane)

It fits the bill for those who like house. I wouldn't mind it as background music at a party, but it's nothing more than that to me. The lyrics are strangely dark for such a joyful sounding song, but I don't think house fans are the biggest critics of that.

5/10

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NoDc0RC02CQ

Zedd - Addicted to a Memory (ft. Bahari)

Generic electronic song. I thought the song's slower segment overstayed its welcome and the drop didn't salvage the rest of it. I'm not much a rave type, so I felt I was trudging through it.

4/10

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KY6YlwL0-U8

Smashing Pumpkins - 1979

I feel like this song was a go-to for late-mid 90s and early 2000s TV shows. I found the instrumental and vocals to be boring. That auto-tuned noise that was repeated throughout the song bothered me quite a bit, for some reason. The instrumentals heavily overpowered the vocals, so that might have affected the rating

3/10

Stone Temple Pilots - Sour Girl

3/10

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YxS4lqppZ6Y

Martin Garrix & Jay Hardway - Wizard (Tchami Remix)

Another house/electronic song with a bland beat and looping lyrics. I thought the song was rather unexciting, nor was it chill. At least it wasn't as aggressive as the second song given to me.

4.25/10

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TIWjz1M7ffQ

A$AP Rocky - Lvl (prod. by Clams Casino)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LcSZURoLbis

I think A$AP Rocky is okay, but I had a few issues with this song. I think his flow is all right, but the electronic beat was off-putting and didn't suit the song at all.

5/10

Foster the People - A Beginner’s Guide to Destroying the Moon

Starts off with the exact same beat as the song above. I really didn't like it at first, but it got better at the 90 second mark. The instrumentals were okay and the vocals didn't annoy me. I thought there were a few oddly placed electronic notes, though.

5/10

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TSOv2PtPyHg

Vince Staples - Norf Norf (Explicit)

His technical skill is apparent, but his lyrical ability needs some work. Just a song about his criminal activity in the city he grew up in. He has promise and the skill, but just needs to develop his work on the page.

6/10

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mb6Jc4juSF8

Now and Forever - Drake

I think any EDM song has a wider vocabulary than this. We get it, Drake. You have to go and you need to know the road.

2/10

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GVAhEYnPAzo

I left one song off, since it would have put this whole mix at 47 minutes. I might check it out later.

I don't know everybody's musical taste, so this is a shot in the dark for me. Zfetch?

Logic - Gang Related

Familiar with this song/the background, it's good I like it.

7.5/10

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NE9w3wipnKM

Childish Gambino - Freaks and Geeks

don't like his voice, so annoying.

3/10

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=27d138zhyZQ

Ronald Jenkees - Guitar Sound

ugh, so boring, makes me think of thechnical metal heads...how fast and still perfect can you play.

4/10

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3r6pBqmanH4

Deadmau5 - Right This Second

This song makes me think of and old school horror/vampire movie. There are several parts to this song the first part is the vampire attacking a lady then there is a chase on horseback then guy finds lady dead goes back to riding his horse looking for the vampire to get revenge.

overall the beat is too intense and gives me a head ache. but proviides something to imagine...

6/10

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XGV0gRYm0Yc

The Eden Project - Fumes

This song is okay, would be better without the soundFX. Haven't heard of this artist/band so I would check out what else they have done.

6.5/10

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v8KPX-KPsFU

Lupe Fiasco - Mural

Nice flow, good voice and lyrics. Long song, but it did't feel long.

7.5/10

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LwS6Qn7hCcA

Logic - Till the End

I like Logic and this is a good song by him, though it's front heavy rapping-wise. I like the strings at the end.

8/10

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ozIdmHtTJMs

Overall this mix is probably a 5/10. Most of this music isn't my taste but I do like Logic and Lupe is okay. I will go check out more by eden project. my guess Kaz

This is just personal tastes, but...

Toro Y Moi - Blessa 4/10. Like the wistfulness, but it was kinda boring.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_x2WExWrNbU

Digable Planets - Black Ego 2/10. I like the groove. And the first girl's voice. Would've been better as an instrumental.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NbMGHEQNmgo

Girls - Lust for Life 3/10. Didn't like the voice at all. Good groove though, on this mix so far as a whole, too.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SuoTjYYqe4c

Radiohead - Lotus Flower 4/10. Meh. Not a radiohead fan.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cfOa1a8hYP8

MF Doom - Madvillain - Accordian 1/10. Super meh.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?t=1&v=rpaonSDPw7Y

The Libertines - What A Waster 5.5/10. So far, the okayest song on this mix...

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ha1bBWfOQE8

Madlib - Solitude 3/10. First 20 seconds: What the crap. Next 3 mins: Okay...

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w2n4sj3LEH0

Four Tet - Angel Echoes 5.5/10. Best song on the mix so far, but still kinda weirded me out. Was kinda waiting for this to build up to something, but it disappointed.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Tpe4id7cLnU

Modest Mouse - Night on the Sun 6/10. Favourite out of this list. Nice groove, voices.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2ZATq7wEdaE

Gonna guess Kaz

Jazz's mix looks like Jaw's. Just my guess there.

but going to post mine:

Nas - The World Is Your's

- 8/10

- Absolute classic, amazing use of sampling for the melody

- Admittedly, aside from this and a few others, don't know enough about Nas but I will definitely starting going through his discography soon.

Black Sheep - The Choice is Your's

- 9/10

- "Engine, engine, number 9" enough said. Always gets me pumped when I'm at bar/club and I hear this part looped in to a random mix

- Unfortunately, this is the only song I know from them but damn, it's good.

Tupac - Can't C Me

- 7/10

- Beat's average but it's Pac so...

Biggie and Shaq - Can't Stop the Reign

- 7.5/10

- Very soulful af.

- Biggie doing damage as expected and Shaq not that bad.

B-Real, Coolio, Method Man, LL Cool J, and Busta Rhymes - Hit Em High

- 8/10

- Squad rap is sometimes lame but in this case, it was done right. When it's retro, it's better.

- Overall, good bars, very good hip-hop track.

Pete Rock and CL Smooth - They Reminisce over You

- 6/10

- Liked the sax part, flow was good.

- Probably spitting meaningful stuff but just didn't find myself too engaged.

Lupe Fiasco - I Gotcha

- 6/10

- Catchy melody, a bit 90's inspired.

- But not sure, never been a big fan of his. Maybe I'll check out more.

Montell Jordan and Flesh N Bone - Falling

- 7.5/10

- Very rhythm and bluesy, I liked the bass too.

- Sound effects and layers were decent as well.

- But not in "the mood" right now, so no feels unfortunately.

Two Door Cinema Club - I Can Talk

- 9/10

- A bit biased here because I saw these guys live and I'm a big FIFA guy so I've heard a few of their songs, including this, in the FIFA games.

- Very upbeat track, pretty melodic.

- A good use of the combo-breaker to introduce a slightly more distinguishable genre from the rest of the mix.

Caesers - Jerk It Out

- 7/10

- Another classic that instantly reminds of me something soccer related. Can't quite put my finger down on what it is.

- Catchy but has a tendency to be annoying I guess.

- I liked it though.

Busta Rhymes - Break Ya Neck

- 7.5/10

- I categorize this as part of the "Silly rap" (can't really think of the correct terms here) that was prevalent during the late 90s and early 00s. But of course, nothing wrong with that.

- Weird seeing Busta rap a lot slower. Almost like Walcott losing a race to Ivanovic. But normalcy came through at around 2 mins.

- The little shout-out to RHCP was neat too.

Busta Rhymes and Janet Jackson - What's it Gonna Be

- 8.5/10

- A good closer to the mix.

- Loved the beat/melody. His flow surprisingly did very well with it.

- Janet complemented it amazingly.

7.5/10 as a total. Very 90's influenced and I'm a sucker for that, despite rap/hip-hop not being my "modus operandi" for music per se. All the songs have potential to grown on me, so very positive there.

Gonna say Formy's mix.

Spoder got mine btw.

Unfortunately, it doesn't seem like anything really resonated with them, so that sucks on my part, but I appreciate the good, honest review. Very critical, to the point, and fair comments made overall.

Thanks. Don't worry about catering to others imo. The exchange is just for us to discover new music and to have discussions, not trying our best to please each other haha
