[PTO] Derek Roy with Capitals

Capitals invite Derek Roy to training camp on professional tryout:

The Washington Capitals are calling in reinforcements for training camp.

Free-agent center Derek Roy has reportedly been invited to attend on a professional tryout, according to Mike Vogl of washingtoncaps.com.

Roy, 32, split last season between the Nashville Predators and Edmonton Oilers, recording 12 goals and 20 assists in 72 total games.

The invite comes shortly after head coach Barry Trotz said he doesn't anticipate seeing center Nicklas Backstrom - who's recovering from offseason hip surgery - during the preseason, creating a need for an extra body in camp.

Last month, Roy's agent said he couldn't believe his client remained unsigned. While this isn't quite what he was after, Roy's one step closer to his next NHL job, whether in Washington or elsewhere, should he put in a good showing at camp.

In 738 career games, Roy has recorded 189 goals and 524 points.

Sure glad we traded Kevin C and potentially Lehkonen, Baptise, Duclair or Bjorkstrand for him..

Who knows what that 2nd round pick could have been. His 6 points were worth it though.

Yea. Still kinda salty about that trade tbh but it was understandable since we were still a contending team.

Funny how Hodgson and Kassian appear to be forever linked due the Vancouver/Buffalo trade, yet there's next to nuttin' said of how that trade really linked Hodgson and Roy...

It was actually Roy's spot in Buffalo that Hodgson took over, and really Hodgson's spot in Vancouver that Roy was brought in to fill eventually. And now here we are with the Preds having walked from Roy and signed Hodgson...

Gee, if Hodgson somehow does fail to pick up his socks in Nashville this season, perhaps next summer he'll get a PTO in Washington?

I'm so sick of hearing whining over the Roy trade. We were firmly in a playoff spot, and needed help at center. Roy was killing it with Dallas (22 points in 30 games). It was worth a shot, and the price was fair given the circumstances.

And crying over the loss of Connauton? Seriously? The guy who was on waivers last year? Understandable though, because Dallas was absolutely stacked on D, right? And boo-hoo, we didn't have the 54th overall pick - we still had probably one of the best drafts in franchise history.

I mean, L.A. just gave up McKeown (>>Connauton) and a 1st for Sekera, and were a bubble team at the time, all to not make the playoffs! Lots of teams have given up 1st rounders for rentals and not made it out of the first round. Stop crying over waiver fodder and a late 2nd!

But but but we had such a great track record with 2nd round picks! This one surely would have been as good as Ellington, sauve, mallet and rodin!

And even though k-con was 12th on our depth chart and needed waivers the following year he would have become the all star he is now.

Wait....what? A 2nd round pick isn't garaunteed to be a star? Dallas picked an ahl goalie with that pick? Dallas waved that all star dman because the couldn't even trade him for a late pick?

Mind blown!
