Ilya Mikheyev
I'm so sick of hearing whining over the Roy trade. We were firmly in a playoff spot, and needed help at center. Roy was killing it with Dallas (22 points in 30 games). It was worth a shot, and the price was fair given the circumstances. And crying over the loss of Connauton? Seriously? The guy who was on waivers last year? Understandable though, because Dallas was absolutely stacked on D, right? And boo-hoo, we didn't have the 54th overall pick - we still had probably one of the best drafts in franchise history. I mean, L.A. just gave up McKeown (>>Connauton) and a 1st for Sekera, and were a bubble team at the time, all to not make the playoffs! Lots of teams have given up 1st rounders for rentals and not made it out of the first round. Stop crying over waiver fodder and a late 2nd! Pretty much. Seemed like a good depth pick-up at the time, unfortunately didn't work out—but better than not taking the risk IMO. Canucks were only two years removed from the SCF and needed a centerman. And what did we get? The ghost of a centerman. Hindsight says it was the wrong move. At the time I was on the fence. Hindsight is easy, but at least it is a logical way to evaluate the moves, unlike proclaiming the future. It's not to downplay the fact that the guy made a tough real-time decision, it's just to say that when we forensically evaluate Gillis' ability to evaluate players, we have to put this one in the fail column. I don't care about the points in St. Louis, I saw Roy there and wasn't too impressed. I'm a homer and talked myself into it, but c'mon. I'm glad MG made a move, but that one failed. Nucks-4-Life
The problem with the Roy trade is that Gillis was preaching the fact that he wanted us to get bigger and tougher to play against. Then he goes and trades for the manlet Roy.

I think to evaluate a move you have to think about context and hindsight. Considering the market, it was a fair price to pay and it plugged some of the holes within the Canucks' line-up. Even if Gillis scouted him hard, he had 22 points in 30 games that year and was coming off 45 point and PPG seasons. Not to mention, his playoff stats at all levels were pretty good. Unfortunately he didn't mesh well, but even still not winning a playoff game that year had little to do with Roy, and even as a "fail" pick-up, he had 7 points in 16 games. Only 5 Canucks had over .5 PPG that season (not including Kesler who barely played).
KeslerPlaysLikeACanadian
Yeah, assists against Edmonton after we had secured the playoffs don't mean much to me. Roy was a zero impact player. Banging in a few points on a good team is expected, not exceptional. This is a player who cannot exert a physical presence or make a difference in the playoffs. He was along for the ride on a great team. You really think 7 pts in 16 games is notable? Gillis chose the wrong guy. I can say that without even being sure of who else was available. I am a huge supporter of the Sundin signing and the Lapierre and Higgins trades. But Roy and Paulson were disasters. Not because of the price, but because they didn't even come close to improving the team.
