baumerman77
Can anyone tell me how cap compliant the team is? and how many contracts the team has signed for the year? Is there space to pick up players through waivers this year? After reading the Rangers issues with Dylan McIlrath, I was wondering if the Canucks had the cap space and contract space to pick up some players like that. Not necessarily McIlrath (although a top 10 pick and 6"5 is appealing). Last year Benning did a great job of hiding Markstrom, wondering if this year he could pick up some quality players for a good price. I'm pretty sure we are under the cap by a bit (roughly 2 million). Benning has given me the impression - through media interviews - that he'd be open to making moves before the season starts. Waivers are tough as there are 28 other teams eligible to claim and most of them have priority over us to claim the said player. I think that the Canucks are set with their roster and would rather keep the spot for a young guy instead of a potential waiver claim. Lastly I would keep the said space as next year their are potential good UFAs out there. Lucic being the rumoured favourite to be signed here. thad
I wouldn't really read so much into the line pairings that are posted. I watched both on ice sessions this morning and the players weren't always in those pairs. Like for example one drill was 2v2 and Bresbois was with Daniel Sedin against Hamhuis and Webber, Prust with Subban ect. yeah it was all over the place really. most of the drills guys were subbing in constantly so lines were always changing. What an awesome day. pretty sweet to see these guys up here. I cant really say anyone stood out as of yet. Lots of positional drills, zone breakouts ect. One thing i noticed is how hard it must be to earn a spot over the vets in camp. All the vets just seemed so sharp and on point. Not that any of the kids looked bad or anything, you can just see the experience and natural instincts take over for the older guys. Ive always been a keep hansen over higgins guy if were making room for jake but honestly higgins looked like maybe the best guy out there today. some notes(again not a lot of standouts, seemed like a warm up day) Gaunce really looked like he belonged. seemed real comfortable out there. sven looked real sharp, very shifty. had a real nice one timer from right in close at the side of the crease that somehow hit the top shelf vey seemed a lot stronger once the intensity ramped up in the end. i was watching him close in the puck battles behind the net and he didnt seem so easily pushed over like last year. stewert seemed real solid like in the prospects tourney. i thought he looked lanky on tv but seeing him live he looks pretty thick and can really skate well for his size. quite impressed with jb on this pick. i was front row just inside the blueline and not too long into a drill labate stopped in front of us and appeared a lot more gassed than the rest. leaning on his stick hard and breathing heavy. i could be over analyzing it but the guys around him didnt look as tired that early Jake looked solid, didnt really wow but nobody did. couple nice shots, put at least one puck in the net. he was signing my scarf and a said quite loud your a beast jake and he looked up me and laughed. then i brought up the mcdavid hit and got some cheers and laughs from the crowd and he let out a pretty good chuckle.... talk about solid though. his arms looked huge when he was moving through the autograph line. Nas19
Yeah today was awesome. So cool seeing all the Canucks up here. No real standouts, everyone looked solid. A couple guys I did notice though were Grenier (holy crap he's a monster and he can skate pretty well), Biega, Baer, McCann (holy eff can he shoot the puck), Virtanen, and Horvat. Very excited for tomorrow.
The-Impersonator
Anyone find it interesting that Jake took part in the media availability yesterday? They didn't let Horvat take part in that last year, and I can't remember a prospect ever getting that opportunity. Could mean they already plan for him to be on the roster. It has been reported that Kassian looked "out of shape" showing up at Habs camp....lol
DeNiro
It has been reported that Kassian looked "out of shape" showing up at Habs camp....lol He's a powerforward, they tend to come to camp overweight and trim down through the season. Bertuzzi always used to show up to camp at like 250lbs. I wouldn't read too much into it. His issue has been between his ears. We'll see if he fixes that or not. thad
Thanks for the report. Hope all you Prince George folks have a blast! No problem I'll try to post a bit every day. Another funny moment in the autograph section someone handed burrows a Kesler shirt and he goes "Ryan Kesler?!! I dunno if we sign those anymore..." With a big grin on his face. Everyone had a good chuckle. Burr is such a boss with the fans. Some real little kid just down from us made a burrows sign, so burrows give him a wave during practice. Then at the end he skated over to say hi and give him a puck. Pretty cool moment. Afterwards he gave everyone the time of day and was very charismatic interacting with the crowd. He even face timed his kid or something and was getting the fans to cheer haha. That guy is a true Canuck through and through. Gonna be a sad day if he ever leaves. jmahyoung
Why can't you get excited ? There is plenty to be excited about, like Horvats sophomore year, Baertschi and Markstrom's opportunity. Then there's the questions, like can Sutter improve on his career high 21 goals? Is Miller capable of holding the load for 55-60 games? Who centers the 4th line come game 1? So many things to be eager for. I personally think this team looks pretty good from a structural stand point. I believe we could suprise people if our chemistry works. An interesting sideplot for me is, can Sutter get 25-30 goals this season? If he gets 15-20 the trade was just not worth it. Bonino could have gotten similar. winthecup
Canucks Give Prince George Credit Following Day One Of Camp Prince George, BC, Canada / CKPG-TV September 18, 2015 07:51 pm It has been a day all hockey fans in the area have been looking forward to. The Vancouver Canucks opened up training camp this morning at the CN Centre as the team made its first trip to Prince George. http://www.ckpg.com/2015/09/18/canucks-give-prince-george-credit-following-day-one-of-camp/

If he gets 15-20 the trade was just not worth it. Bonino could have gotten similar. Bonino couldn't check or skate like Sutter so equal goal production would still see Sutter as the better player...Sutter can win FO's as well.
