Miley Cyrus Wants To Stop BC Wolf Cull

from Vancouver Sun:

VANCOUVER - Pop star Miley Cyrus paid a visit to the Great Bear Rainforest this weekend to learn more about the local wolf cull and trophy hunting.

The former child actor travelled to Klemtu this weekend after contacting the local conservation group Pacific Wild. She was accompanied by members of the Kitasoo/Xais’Xai First Nation, wolf biologists Mary and John Theberge and ecologist Carl Safina.

“When I first spoke out, I knew in my heart that the wolf cull was wrong,” Cyrus said in a news release from Pacific Wild.

“But after this visit, I know science is on my side, not just on the wolf cull, but also on the trophy hunt issue. Both are unsustainable and both are horrific. Both have to end.”

Earlier this month, when she asked her fans to sign a petition against the cull, Cyrus earned the ridicule of Premier Christy Clark, who deadpanned that the singer should stick to twerking.

As long as it's legal and not a threat to sustainability; if people want to hunt, go for it.

Hunt sure, trophy hunting, not so much. And I'd prefer it if the province worked to make the environment sustainable and let mother nature take care of itself, rather than trying to do mother nature's job.

It's funny that people speak of mother nature as something humans control. We're actually a part of mother nature. If mother nature wanted to get rid of us, it would be no problem. Becomes easy enough anyways as we increase in population and make our own environment less hospitable for ourselves.

Agreed.

Also, there is no evidence that culling has significant effect on caribou populations. Of course, killing stuff is cheap so we go with that option.

Alberta just had a similar cull. Caribou population is down because of oil and gas development, so somehow the solution was to kill wolves. It's a supremely misguided policy. I'm not sure what BC will do, but Alberta used strychnine to poison wolves, which is incredibly cruel and tends to effect other animals as well. Helicopter hunting can be just as cruel.

It's a little unfortunate that Cyrus and Clark are turning this issue into a clown show. At least Cyrus is bringing awareness to the issue while Clark is making jokes on twitter.

If I'm a wolf, I'd howl for someone with a whole lot more credibility than Miley Cyrus to speak on my behalf. If only wolves could talk...
