-AJ-
I can see that you're not on here often, but this sort of thing would probably go in the GDT once it comes up. Correct me if I'm wrong though.

Ossi Vaananen
I posted this in the training camp thread - which is really where this discussion should go - but here are the lineups from the practice session yesterday: st group: Baertschi - Sutter - Virtanen Prust - Vey - Dorsett Gaunce - Jones - Kenins Shinkaruk Sbisa - Corrado Bartkowski Markstrom Bachman 2nd session practice lines: Sedin Sedin Grenier Burrows Horvat Vrbata Cracknell - McCann - Friesen Labate - Cassels - Jensen Miller Cannata
SID.IS.SID.ME.IS.ME
Sedin-Sedin-Virtanen Gaunce-Horvat-Vrbata Burrows-Sutter-Hansen Baertschi-Vey-Grenier Edler-Hutton Hamhuis-Tanev Bartkowski-Weber Miller (first 30 minutes) Markstrom (second 30 minutes) I'd like to shake things up a bit: -try Virt with the twins for a full game and see if it jumpstarts his offense. -wanted to see Horvat paired with both Vrbata and Gaunce at some point, so why not try all three together? -third line is a flashback to the old Burr-Kes-Hansen checking line (they were highly effective and had speed to burn), with Sutter taking Kesler's spot -and try a kid line on the 4th, with Vey having some talent on his wings -for D try Edler and Hutton together with Hutton on his off side in an Ehrhoff type role -Hamhuis and Tanev have history as an near elite level shutdown pairing -and try a quick, mobile, albeit small, 3rd pair with Bart and Webs I like this lineup because it could really inform the coaches on whether or not there are better options available with this roster (compared to the lineup that appears to be already set in stone for opening night). Looks good, I really like the shutdown 3rd line...could be magic.

Can't belive how much ice time the Sedins got last game instead of guys like Shink and Virt. Typical Canucks though, vets vets vets. Even in the damn preseason. DownUndaCanuck
I'd like to see the likes of Jensen, Shinkaruk, Gaunce and Kenins get a good chance because one of them will have to fill in for Higgins. Let's try this: Sedin - Sedin - Jensen (he had success there before, give the kid a shot) Baertschi - Sutter - Vbrata (really hope these guys build some chemistry) Shinkaruk - Horvat - Burrows Kenins - Vey - Hansen Leave Dorsett and Prust out. It might be a Calgary game but there shouldn't be any fiestiness, lets just focus on figuring out which one of these kids will stick. Regardless of our lineup, it looks like Calgary is going to play their big defencemen of Giordano, Brodie, Wideman, Hamilton and Russel. That's the best top-5 in the NHL by a long shot and they are going to absolutely rip us apart - not defensively, but offensively. Calgary wins this 6-2. Baggins
I'd like to see the likes of Jensen, Shinkaruk, Gaunce and Kenins get a good chance because one of them will have to fill in for Higgins. All of those guys (and Cassels) can move freely between Vancouver and Utica. There will be opportunities for them throughout the season to cover injuries. I'd rather see Virtanen of McCann stay to cover for Higgins injury to start the season. For them it's Canucks or back to junior. This is a chance to give a junior player a taste of real NHL games. alfstonker
Shink Sedin Jensen (as per DUC) Baert Sutter Virtanen Gaunce Horvat Hansen Prust McCann Grenier Danny, Burr, Vbrata, Dorsett and Kenins sit. Edler Tanev Pedan Bart Hutton Weber Sbisa, Hamhuis sit. Markstrom with Miller backing up This is not my starting line up for the season but I think we must find out how much some threshold players have got and these games are the best opportunity. Unlike DUC I do think Calgary might take some liberties and that is why Prust plays. We know Dorsett can fit in and it is imperative to give the likes of Prust and Bart as many games as possible. I have one reservation and that is whether Baertschi has the grit for the NHL. He has still to convince me. He has all the skills but his admittedly small sample at the end of last season didn't fill me with confidence. That is why I have put Virtanen on his line, hopefully Virtanen will be such a handful it might take the eye off Baert. I would have liked to put Danny in Baertschis spot. The line that excites me is the Gaunce/Horvat/Hansen line. I also think Jensen plays better with better players. I have been very impressed with him in patches over the last 2 seasons but like Bo I think he thrives with a better challenge and with better players. You do realize Brodie has a broken hand and will miss 3-6 weeks? As for best 5 D I wouldn’t say flames have best at all. Zero teams have better D core than NYR or NSH and if you include a goalie on the back end, flames would be behind a few other teams. Weber, Josi. Jones, Ellis, Ekholm/Jackman (Rinne) McDonagh, Giradi, Staal, Yandle, Boyle (Lundqvist) Pietrangelo, Bouwmeester. Shattenkirk, Gunnarsson, Bortuzzo (Elliot) Meyers, Byfuglien, Trouba, Entstrom, Stuart/Morrisey (Pavalec) Lindholm, Fowler, Vatanen, Despres, Juice (Andersen) Ekblad, Campbell, Gubranson, Mitchell, Kulikov (Luongo)

luckylager
With Higgins' injury I'm hoping to see all of our "fringe" guys and prospects skate tonight. Something like Baer-Horvat-Virt Gaunce-McCann-Grenier Kennins-Vey-*vet *vet-Cassels-Jensen A forward line up like that looks terrible on paper, but it is preseason and will provide a fairly level playing field to assess who goes where over the next week(s)/ who can compete. Also, without a bunch of cool and calm vets just going through the places as they get their legs back, it might make for a more uptempo game, end to end kind of stuff. Again, that's not a "winning" line up, but it gets our prospective Higgins replacements and 4th C prospects skating in the same game. Also, continues to give all of our prospects gioid experience against guys they may be seeing a lot of. Edit- forgot about shink. Shink 2nd line, Kenins 3, Gaunce 4, I guess.
