hearditall
I would disagree. I would say Quick was an above average and now is closer to average. He plays on a good team it helps his numbers. I think I read somewhere that his backup goalies had a better save percentage than him over the past three seasons. His underlying numbers aren't that good.Hows Quick these days??? Googlie
And Sbisa as it stands now is pretty over paid for a guy with his only redeeming quality being "he likes to hit sometimes".He's in therapy. NHTyrany
I'm already liking the results JB is already bringing to the team. At least he has the balls to make some deals and cut his losses on the ones that don't pay off. We were far too conservative and predictable beforehand and kept average players for too long. I really look forward to watching this team now and for at least the next 3 years.I credit much of this to JB because a few years ago it was like watching paint dry and knowing when it did finally dry it would be the wrong colour. baumerman77
Hows Quick these days???Pretty average. We will have to wait until the end of the season to make any assessments of his game this year. 9 games is far too small of a sample size to assess goalies. Baggins
Benning's Biggest Blunder? Thus far, that is. For me, probably squandering a 2nd on Vey. He's frittered away a few picks, & we should be taking the 'shotgun-approach' on drafting young D. Would have been far better last yr to retain Santo & Schreds(hustling RH C's), thus using another selection on the back end. Try to find more Subban/Hutton's. Them 2 guys(Santo, Schredder) likely play 'bigger' than LV. We only needed a short bridge to our slew of emerging C's... Sbisa contract? Has certainly garnered it's fair share of detractors. Sure don't like the stage this sets for future RFA negotiations. Hopefully this comparable is never used (file 13). Kassian deal. Hard to believe it's the best we could obtain(he'll take the 5th, as well) Lack return. Don't like it, compared with what other young 'tenders garnered. If Markstrom doesn't bail out Benning here, this one could get ugly in a big way. A CDC sig used to quote: "It's easier to be critical, than correct." Which is pretty hard wisdom to deny. Could also be that setbacks occur(seemingly) more rapidly than payoffs come to fruition. With this in mind, some of JB's moves may positively outweigh the duds,(or some negatives noted here, reverse), thus, it's too early to judge, definitively..one way or the other. In the end, it's a forum-all voices, enthusiastic, endorsing, or dissenting, should be able to stake a claim...I don't see any of those as duds. Life doesn't come with guarantees, sports even less. I tend to judge deals on whether or not they make sense when they were made. Vey for a bottom end 2nd was a better gamble than actually using the pick and waiting 3 to 4 years to see if it panned out. It was a good gamble to speed up the rebuild process. And one would think a player that has enjoyed the success Vey did in the AHL would have a better chance of making it in the NHL than the odds of that 2nd round pick. Only 30% manage to play more than 100 NHL games and only 25% manage to play more than 200 NHL games. That's just playing in the NHL not the percentages of being a star or even good players. For some perspective: Mason Raymond, with over 500 NHL games, is quite a successful 2nd rounder. Getting an actual star in the second round is almost like winning the lottery. It's happens, but not often. Sbisa's contract is fine when you consider it's a three year deal. If he signed for what fans want it would have been a one year deal instead of three. No way a young d-man signs longer than that if it's for his current worth. Benning was gambling on him improving and he has. By the third year that contract could look like a complete steal. Kassian went through stage 1 substance abuse rehab last year which is through the league. Combined with inconsistent play and getting in the doghouse with all four of his NHL coaches he really didn't have any value. Prust would have cost more than a 5th to acquire. Adding Kassian, who Montreal would know to be a gamble, brought Prusts cost down to a 5th. Keep in mind Benning said he put Kassian's name out on the market last January and got no offers. None. Not a single inquiry. If anybody valued Lack higher we would have gotten more. It's just that simply. His name was out there since the end on the season for any team to make an offer. It's simply a case of fans overvaluing our players. Much like Kassian. A player is only worth what another team is willing to pay. Btw, I had that Benjamin Disraeli quote below my sig for several years. I'm rather surprised anybody remembered it.
Nuxfanabroad
Hi Baggins, Yeah, I remember you & I discussing the Vey deal(last season), & you had some pretty compelling arguments in his favour..these things can waver to the + or - margin, sometimes paying dividends after all have given up. I'd get out the chess set before debating with you further, as you usually present some interesting angles. This whole matter's kinda funny to me, t'was preseason, so I tried to start a thread to get people talkin puck. Seems if one is not religiously shaking pom poms, waves of silly insults come rollin in.In a convoluted way, I'd even say my original post was an endorsement of JB's work(to that date). The criticisms were largely depth/perimeter moves, suggesting his major deals(namely Kes; Sutter; 1st rounders) have held up nicely to analysis. Kass's problems(though rumoured) were not official at that point-JB's looking mighty vindicated with ZK's latest meltdown, & Prust's solid contributions.(I acknowledged this in another thread)So we go on a month-slide & the pendulum could swing the other way? That's how this board usually goes. If one is to look at their fav team objectively, the two true questions are where does it currently stand (& also of it's future)? With the work of both MG & JB, fortunately the team looks poised on both accounts.Lastly, on player criticisms, using Sbisa as example. I say if you're paid millions in the entertainment biz, you're subject to both fan favour & ridicule. His gaffes pizzed me off plenty last season. If fan critique(appraisal, feedback, etc...) on various sites puts a little more heat on these guys, well I'm sure they'd all tell you it's the nature of their job. Van city is counting on this guy to play to the level of his renumeration-thus far, he appears to be pulling up his socks. I'm sure all fans will gladly accept being wrong,(& serve up mea culpas) if this guy plays like a 3~4 mill D all yr.
Me_
Sbisa's deal was really bad. But didn't cost too much. I would say his biggest blunder so far was how he has handled Miller. He overpaid and gave way too long of a contract (if Miller wouldn't have taken less length then I would have walked). And then not trading him this off season (and publicly saying he could have ). I don't necessarily think Lack was a better goalie than Miller, but he was better at the price point. Paying an average goalie (who was 34) 6 mil per season is just too much. I think the last 6 years (save for Thomas) has shown that you don't need an elite goalie to win a cup - just an average or above average goalie hopefully at a decent price point.Eddie Lack: 3GP / 1W / 2L / 0.333win% / 3.60GAA / .852sv% / 0SORyan Miller: 10GP / 4W / 2L / 4OTL / 0.667win% / 2.16GAA / .923sv% / 1SOCory Schneider: 9GP / 6W / 2L / 1OTL / 0.750win% / 2.17GAA / .919sv% / 0SORoberto Luongo: 8GP / 3W / 4L / 1OTL / 0.429win% / 2.15GAA / .934sv% / 0SORegardless whether one chooses to see the above mentioned numbers, Lack is last in line. MGMT are doing fine look at what JB had to work with... NTC he's doing above great actually. As for trades etc. It's not an exact science, you win some you lose some. It wasn't all that long ago people on here and I mean A LOT of people were saying how DEEP the playing resources of the club were. They are but development takes time, meanwhile quiet, strong, selfless players like Edler carry the load for this team's soft and defensively ineffective set of forwards. I have lost count of our forwards absolute "pewee league" attempts at both coverage and lack of ability to win physical battles in the defensive zone. THAT is what was hurting Bieksa and THAT is what's hurting Edler, Hamhuis and laterally Tanev and Hutton. These guys are all defenders who would walk into other GOOD teams and never miss a beat. Why, because they in all likelihood have 3 guys operating in front of them who could make "a dent" on the opposition forwards. The Boston D wasn't just good because they had Chara, they also had 12 meat eaters in font of them who took no prisoners when coming back to help out.
