According to Rich Chere of the Star-Ledger in New Jersey, the Leafs and Devils may have a trade on the table that would send the 30-year-old centre to Toronto. It is believed, Chere writes, that Maple Leafs general manager Lou Lamoriello is discussing several potential trade scenarios with Devils GM Ray Shero, including centre Nazem Kadri as a potential piece of a trade or a package deal that includes winger James van Riemsdyk. Zajac is entering the third year of an eight-year, $46 million contract. He has five years and $31.75 million remaining on his deal with a cap hit of $5.75 million. The Winnipeg native was drafted by Lamoriello's Devils in 2004 with the 20th overall pick and has spent his entire career with the Devils. Through nine seasons in New Jersey, he's registered 348 points in 625 games. Last season, he scored 11 goals and added 14 assists in 74 games. ====================================================== Trading JVR or Kadri in any sort of a deal for a $5.75 million Zajac with 5 years left on that contract...wow. Seriously wow. I thought the Leafs were turning a corner on selling youth for large contracts that did nothing to help the team. Guess i was wrong. He's a middling 2nd liner, and more suited to be a 3rd liner on a team looking to go anywhere. And then of course there is his poor contract. Even the coach said he's prepared to lose before winning. There are no expectations for the team and Zajac doesn't answer all of the questions to make the playoffs. He's a better Leader than everyone on that Leafs team. It's about the future and you want the best, most influential guys that can create a positive atmosphere for everyone in that locker room. Kadri has attitude problems. JVR is silent. Lou knows this. Everyone knows this. The leafs have no leaders on the ice and everyone plays for themselves. Dion Phaneuf is the Captain, that's all you need to know. Zajac is on a different level than Bozak. Bozak is an average player with some playmaking skills. Zajac is what he is. His offensive game is of a 3rd liner, maybe even a 2nd liner but he's a monster defensively and plays the game the right way. Yes, he's overpaid. Everyone knew this when the contract was signed. He's done enough to prove that he belongs and NJ and their fans know this, Zajac isn't worth nothing. He's a respectable player and NJ and their fans have no problem having Zajac's contract on their roster. Shanahans been trying to move out every Burke/Nonis player and bring in his own. He's changing the whole environment. He traded 5 of them for Grabner. Then, he cut several young players early when some of them should have made the team. If the Leafs get Zajac for like 4 million (NJ pays like 1.5 or whatever) then it wouldn't be that bad. Depends who goes the other way though, but I doubt it's more than like just Kadri.
