Mike Gillis Looks Better With Every Passing Day

Outspoken moronic fans like this make me embarrassed to be a canucks fan.

Lol seriously? What did he say to make you take out the gun? Talk about being defensive.

If all of you are going to jump on me and the other posters who are defending MG, you have to be able to acknowledge that JB has made some very questionable moves in his short stint here. Off the top of my head:

Trading a second for Vey

Dorsette contract

Sbisa contract

Kassian for Prust

Kesler for Bonino and pieces

Bonino, Clendenning, 2nd for Sutter, 3rd

Trading Lack instead of Miller

And that's just in two years. This thread wasn't designed to be a MG vs JB thread but gawddam do you JB nut riders get defensive.

For some us very few of those are questionable.

You've now changed the topic of your post from Canucks drafting to trading....I like how you put 'Kesler for Bonino and pieces...One of those pieces happens to be Jared McCann...If he keeps heading on the trajectory he's on,that trade will tilt in Vancouvers favour.

Cue the oncoming list of Gillis blunders...

My original post actually touched on trading too so I suggest you brush up on that before you start pointing fingers.

I understand he got McCann but that doesn't mean that this was the best return for a guy like Kesler.

Divulge please. I'm having a hard time seeing how you can defend most of those.

I've "divulged" repeatedly in numerous Gillis threads. It's been beaten to death already. But just for you....

  • A 2nd for Vey made complete sense. Speeds up the rebuild as you don't have to wait the 3 or 4 years of development that 2nd would need to get where Vey already is. When you consider a 2nd rounder has less than a 30% chance of playing 100 nhl games and less than a 25% chance of playing more than 200, a 2nd for a guy that's gone through the development and had success is the much smarter gamble.
  • Dorsett's deal is pricey but I believe it's worth it.
  • Sbisa is a young d-man. Had he signed for less it would have been a one year deal. You want a longer term with a young player it's typical to overpay in the first year with the idea he'll be a bargain by the final year.
  • Kassian had no value. Years of development with no defensive game or consistency to his play. Add in stupid selfish penalties and crying to the press about being scratched = good riddance. Prust may not have the offensive upside but at least he brings a consistent effort. Dumping Kassian opened a top 9 spot for another young player.
  • MG dragged his feet on Kesler for a year. A pissed off Kesler gave us one trade option. You get what you can in that circumstance and get the disgruntled player out. MG should have learned that from the Luongo fiasco and didn't.
  • I see Sutter as an upgrade on Bonino. I can't understand why anybody would be upset by it.
  • Trading Lack made complete sense to me and I said so before the trade happened, I see Lack as a very good backup or average (at best) starter. Miller had to learn a new system of goaltending last year which the majority here ignore. That's something I also pointed out many times last year. Throughout his career he has come out to cut angles, Here he needed to learn to play in the paint. Anytime you change style like that there will a drop before the benefits show. On top of that I felt the team played far more confident (taking more offensive risks) with Miller in net than with Lack. With the year Markstrom had, and Lack was Markstroms backup in Sweden despite being two years older, I saw Lack as expendable. It made sense to keep the veteran and bring Markstrom up.

It's extremely comical how far back you had to go to prove that point. It kind of proves mine actually.

Are you gonna go on and tell me how the Canucks got to a final a few decades ago?

You specifically mentioned the Canucks drafting being terrible even before Gillis arrived, mentioning past draftees directly addresses & refutes your point.

I will also tell you what many others already have...Gillis didn't draft McCann. Your very first statement to support your position is completely & utterly false.

Since it's obvious you have access to the internet & could have easily looked up that information, I'm now stuck trying to decide if you're willfully ignorant or just really, really dumb.

Oh, & the Canucks went to the final a couple years ago, with 6 of those players I mentioned on the roster...yeah, I'm gonna go with the dumb option.

So do I well except NHL 16 :P

My biggest worry with Sutter is his contract. With what most project Horvat will become, the strides McCann has had in recent weeks, and with Henrik Sedin and Vey both Center's for the team. This does cause a log jam down the middle.

I mean Sutter's term and NTC means he's going to want to stay with the team for the duration of the contract but with him being seen as this season's 2nd Line Center and maybe a 3rd Line Center once Horvat is ready how where does McCann fit into the line up? Wouldn't this cause frustration with either Horvat or McCann if either one of them end up a 4th line Center since Sutter is likely to be the team's 2nd or 3rd?

+1...more if I could.

To add to this:

  • Vey scored 10 goals for us already. That is 10 more than our last four 2nd rounders combined (Mallett, Rodin, Sauve and Ellington). He may not make it, but that is the story with most 2nd rounders.
  • Dorsett is a beast. Love the guy. A quarter million and one year less would have been nice, but it's hard to argue that he didn't earn his new deal.
  • What did we have for LD when Sbisa signed? Edler, soon-to-be-UFA Hamhuis, and...? Hutton has been fantastic so far, but nobody really saw that coming. Obviously the coaching staff and scouts think that Sbisa has more to give.
  • Kassian had no value, and may continue to have no value at next trade deadline. Better to get a guy who is a good influence in the meantime, and then worth a 2nd/3rd as a trade chip later in the year.
  • Hands were definitely tied on Kesler, and in the end looks like we came out OK. Can't see how this is a knock on JB.
  • Agree about Sutter. Looks a little off in preseason though, but has a far better body of work than Bonino.
  • If Markstrom continues to play even close to how he has lately, then I don't see how trading Lack matters at all.
