Palestinian flag raised at UN for the first time ever

The flag of the Palestinian Authority was raised at the United Nations in New York City on Wednesday for the first time. The event came after years of controversy and debate over the issue.

The historic moment followed an address at the United Nations' General Assembly by Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas, who honored "the martyrs, the prisoners and the wounded, and to those who gave their lives while trying to raise this flag."

The eight countries that voted against the move were led by the United States and Israel and joined by Australia, Canada, Marshall Islands, Federated States of Micronesia, Palau, and Tuvalu.

U.S. ambassador Samantha Power told the Wall Street Journal at the time that the "No" vote by the U.S. was "not a rejection of Palestinians' aspirations for statehood" but that raising the Palestinian flag is not an alternative to negotiations and will not bring parties closer to peace.

Abbas, who was widely rumored to be dropping a "bombshell" at his speech, ultimately declared before world leaders that he is no longer bound by agreements signed with Israel, including the Oslo Peace Accords, and called on the United Nations to provide international protection for the Palestinian people.

"As long as Israel refuses to cease settlement activities and to the release of the fourth group of Palestinian prisoners in accordance with our agreements, they leave us no choice but to insist that we will not remain the only ones committed to the implementation of these agreements, while Israel continuously violates them," Abbas said.

"We therefore declare that we cannot continue to be bound by these agreements and that Israel must assume all of its responsibilities as an occupying power," he declared.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, the speech and flag raising weren't without criticism.

On Tuesday, an editorial by Abbas appeared on The Huffington Post, in which he said, "On the vote to raise our flag at the U.N., the international community demonstrated its solidarity with the Palestinian people."

"Now it must act with urgency to seize the momentum from this symbolic gesture and provide a clear plan to end the illegal Israeli occupation, uphold human rights and achieve justice," said Abbas.

UK abstained.

While this was mainly symbolic, it does open the door for Palestine.

Was our government on the right side of history with this?

The majority of Canadians don't think so.

Why is this country so owned by Israel?

This country is owned by Israel because the Conservative Government is so in love with Israel that it basically gave them it's Letterman jacket.

Stephen Harper has said, and shown, time and time again that he will unabashedly support Israel in everything that they do. It's got obvious religious connotations and overtones, because of his personal beliefs and because of the beliefs of those that make up the VAST majority of his voting base. I have talked to people personally who say that his stance on Israel is their primary reason for voting him in.

A Christian myself, I can hardly understand how any religious connotations can exempt a country from the consequences of their present day actions. If God wanted them to have that land, he'd do what he did in the Bible and give it to them on a silver-freaking-platter.

You need to reread your Bible, never has it been silver plattered to them.

Canada should have abstained.

As far as supporting Israel unwaveringly, sure. But call them out on their BS. And with that said, Israel is not the biggest reason there is poverty in Palestine.

What?

I don't get why there's this weird thing about Israel. No other country gets such weird special treatment with kid gloves. I don't care about Israel anymore than I care about Tanzania or Bhutan. Why do people get so bent out of shape over it? I don't get it...

The arabs in Palestine in the late 1800s wanted the Jews to come back because of the Jews' culture of richness and the fact that Palestine's infrastructure hadn't improved in >40 years.

The Israelis shouldn't deny the Palestinians that live there, but at the same time, they shouldn't allow the extremists to have their sway with Israel. A major problem with the middle east is that the muslims there (militant and otherwise) doesn't want Israel there because of a rift that goes all the way back to Chaldean times. If religions/ethnic groups had Facebook accounts, the relationship between the Jews and muslims would be "It's complicated".

They have God's favour on them... whether you believe in God or not.

And I know I brought up God, but I really don't want to get into too heated of a religious debate right now. Please.

LOL. Surely if they had god's favour they wouldn't be in this position.

Regardless, I do not understand why other nations bend over backwards for Israel. It's just one little country with little value or interest, relative to other nations.

Honestly, if you take God out of the picture, I don't know either. I wouldn't even know how the Jews still exist right now with all they've been through right now if it wasn't for God, tbh.
