Mackcanuck
Didn't NJ have to give up a first round pick? They were supposed to, but Bettman gave it back to them. They were suposed to lose their first pick but Bettman changed his mind NJ forfeited their 1st(10th overall) and were given the last pick in the 1st round, 30th overall They also had a $3M fine reduced to $1.5M
Jiggs50
Again what if Luongo gets "injured" and goes on ir? Like Pronger
D-Money
When that time comes it will become a legal battle between the league and the Canucks. Although after all that has happened since we signed Luongo. I don't imagine the league will fight the Canucks too hard on it. As you mentioned it was legally signed and approved by the league in the first place. The NJD got away with murder essentially after kovalchuk walked. I don't see the Canucks getting hit too hard when the time comes. It would be too unreasonable I hear the bolded part parroted regularly, but it simply isn't true. Kovalchuk played the first 2 years for a salary that was LESS than his cap hit. Then a raise was going to kick in that would pay him $11 million + for the next 5 years. But he decided he wanted to end the contract at that time, and New Jersey agreed. So if anything, New Jersey ate 1.5 million of cap hit more than they should have. They also lost their best player for nothing, and had their 2014 pick dropped from 10th overall to 30th, and they were not allowed to even trade it. Chalky
From my understanding, as explained by an NHL scout with no connection to either team, the 8.5 mil number is the cap hit number we will take if Luongo retires before 2021 no matter what year it happens. It's amortized over the number of years remaining on his contract. Therefore, if he retires in 2021 we have 8.5 mil cap recapture, but we have no recapture beforehand. Realistically, in my opinion anyways, I would prefer him to retire next year and take the smaller hit for the longer term. 8.5 for one season is a crippler. apollo
I'm not even remotely worried about the luongo penalty. What the nhl did is illegal. They changed the rule after the contract was signed. Aquaman knows it, his lawyers know it... No one should be worried. His cap hit will be 800k as it is now. What the Kings did, well I'm biased but that's some quality BS. Regardless it doesn't matter. As long as they have the same GM they'll never be a good team because their players don't trust him anymore.
The Lock
I find it hard to think that the NHL would make us have to deal with such a penalty if it actually happened. Vancouver's a major market for them and it wouldn't be in the NHL's best interest for it to happen.

Honestly doubt he will retire and leave any money on the table. Like Hossa I predict he will coincidentally go on "long term injured reserve" once he starts making less than 1M

Like Hossa I predict he will coincidentally go on "long term injured reserve" once he starts making less than 1M I hope so. There is precedent, look at Pronger, he's still under contract with Arizona while working with the league. It was a BS ruling to begin with, but as it is now the numbers are the numbers. elvis15
No way we get stuck with a 8.5 million dollar cap hit in 2021. That's just unreasonable LTI for 'old-age-itis' in his final year if he makes it that far but still wants to retire. Done. But for Richards, the difference between what would have been the buyout cap hit and the restructured version is something teams are already complaining about. It's been mentioned in the multiple other threads on this (and yes, there is one on the recapture penalty after the settlement).
N7Nucks
Here's hoping we don't get boned too hard should Luo retire early. League going easy seems to be a trend though. Fingers crossed?

It was a BS ruling to begin with, but as it is now the numbers are the numbers. Pronger is legitimately injured. The man still suffers from the effects of his concussion. There are rules for LTIR. I doubt the NHL will allow teams to put anyone on LTIR to avoid recapture.
HC20.0
Pronger is legitimately injured. The man still suffers from the effects of his concussion. There are rules for LTIR. I doubt the NHL will allow teams to put anyone on LTIR to avoid recapture. I know he's legit injured, but I think he's referring to the fact that he's working for the league while still being on Philly/Arizona's payroll. Which is BS. It's a really big loop hole with the LTIR, which lets teams like Boston and Arizona circumvent the cap.
