Lawsuit filed against Nestle for illegal water use in California

A group of environmental organizations filed suit against the U.S. Forest Service on Tuesday alleging that the government agency allowed Nestlé to bottle water in California on an expired permit.

The lawsuit, filed in U.S. District Court, calls on the Forest Service to shut down immediately a four-mile pipeline that transports water from Strawberry Creek to a bottling facility. The permit in question expired in 1988, according to the lawsuit. The plaintiffs demand that the Forest Service conduct another review that takes into account environmental impacts, according to the lawsuit. Nestle is not a party to the suit.

The suit, filed by advocacy groups the Story of Stuff Project, the Courage Campaign Institute and the Center for Biological Diversity, comes amidst an historic drought that has prompted policies requiring the state’s residents to cut personal water use. The plaintiffs argue that corporations shouldn’t get such unfettered water use while regular people have to cut back.

“Nestlé’s actions aren’t just morally bankrupt, they are illegal,” said Eddie Kurtz, executive director of the Courage Campaign Institute, in a statement. “Our government won’t stand up to them, so we’re taking matters into our own hands.”

In a statement, Nestle Waters spokesperson Jane Lazgin said the permit “remains in full force and effect under the federal Administrative Procedure Act.”

“We are working diligently with the USFS on the renewal of the permit,” said Lazgin in an emailed statement. “We will continue to abide by all relevant laws and regulations, be it federal, state or local as it relates to our operations.”

Nestle continues to be under further scrutiny. I stay away from their products (Food, chocolates, clothing and more) as much as I can.

Wonder how long the BC government will protect them.

Just for clarification....under NAFTA and the chapter 11 provision of the ISDS (the same provision hidden in the TPP and the CETA Harper has negotiated) Canada is currently being sued for $10.5 BILLION for trying to stop water exports.

We literally cannot tell nestle to stop without being sued.

Fair trade agreements need to stop. The main issue is if we stop Nestle here there is NOTHING to stop the parent company suing us from the US claiming we are harming their ability to make money under the ISDS.

Again...the same provision hidden in the TPP and CETA. Ironically, all negotiated by Conservatives...

I hope this gets traction, it's a travesty that our useless Premier puts on the knee pads for Nestle like the true corporate shill she is. I try not to get too heated on the forum (FAIL!) but I sincerely hate Nestle, their CEO and Christy Clark. This whole Nestle issue is exactly why we (as in the global mankind "we") should never have allowed the death of Capitalism/Socialism in favour of Corporatism. I hate Paul Bulcke and in my opinion he deserves the same fate as Dominic Greene. Literally, the exact same fate.

I don't understand who's drinking all this bottled water?

I swear they must just be stockpiling enormous amounts of water somewhere, similar to what diamond companies do to jack up the price.

How do governments sit back and let corporations steal their most precious resource? It makes no sense.

Short term profits, jobs, income from taxes etc...

Still trying to wrap my head around this years later .....frak this ........going out back to put a few more holes in the shed.

When I read that the POS CEO for Nestle thinks that water is not a human right I friggin lost it

"According to the former CEO and now Chairman of the largest food product manufacturer in the world, corporations should own every drop of water on the planet — and you’re not getting any unless you pay up"
