Is it time to trade for a top defenceman ?

coffeys prime was on oilers just because he won 2 more cups on pens doesnt mean he wasnt in twilight of his career chelios was in his prime for playing for habs he rotted away on hawks and then won a few more with wings basically you draft number ine dmen not trade for them

He didn't just win more cups, he won more Norris Trophies and broke 100 points in a season, which has literally only been done by four other defensemen EVER.

So he did something that has only been done by four other men, after being traded, and he still wasn't in his prime?

He scored 100 points in back to back seasons with Pittsburgh, and his 113 points with the Pens one year would be the NHL record for points in a season if not for Coffey himself and Bobby Orr.

The only reason the Coffey trade to the Penguins isn't remembered as shocking is that Gretzky was traded fairly soon after.

Eight years after being traded from Edmonton, he won the Norris Trophy in a runaway vote and was 4th in voting for the Hart Trophy.

Even if you chopped all of his Edmonton years off of his career entirely, there's a very good chance he would be considered the 2nd best offensive defenseman that ever played the game.

I have to disagree about Coffey. He was still in his prime with Pittsburgh and arguably even LA / Detroit.

Why does Luca Sbisa get a free pass from Canucks management.

The new Bieksa but worse. Not good in the o zone or D zone but brings a little toughness not even as much as Bieksa though.

Scratch him. Still living off being a former first round pick 7 years later.

Edler-Tanev

Hamhuis-Bartowski

Hutton-Weber

Because he's the only d-man who plays physical.

Sbisa has actually been very good this season. Instead of jumping on the anti Sbisa bandwagon you should just start watching the games

Speaking of free passes amazing how almost no one on here mentions Tanev's brutal give away on the winning goal against St. Louis. Yet people like you still whine about Sbisa despite him having a fairly solid start to the year.

Sbisa and Tanev each have an equal amount of game costing turn overs yet no one mentions Tanev's...

If only it were that easy to acquire an elite defenceman.

I remember back in the summer of 2005 we had an opportunity to sign Scott Niedermayer but management at the time stated that they'd prefer to sign Markus Naslund instead (due to the limited cap at the time). As much as I liked Naslund, imagine what could have been if we'd signed Niedermayer instead? Or if we'd drafted Shea Weber?

I hope the current regime can draft and develop an elite defenceman. I doubt we'll acquire one through a trade.

scott wanted to play with his bro Rob in anaheim

Or Sutter blowing it in OT against Calgary. Everyone makes mistakes, the real question is do they repeat that same mistake

To be fair to Sutter that was a really good play by Wideman. One of those it happens plays, rather than a mistake by Sutter.

If Sutter had his head up he would've seen Daniel on a breakaway and would've chipped it out instead of trying to carry it out of his zone

Really? cuz I'd rather have Bouwmeester, much better skater and Hamhuis has looked like he could use a change in scenery for 2 years now.

Bouwmeester hasn't been the same since he left florida. the guy put up back to back 15 goal seasons and since then has been a shell of his former self. Still decent but I would think his better days are behind him.

You obviously were too young for hockey back then as Coffey was still a number 1 defenseman for Pittsburgh for a long time and then won a Norris in Detroit in the mid nineties after he was traded. As for Chelios, Montreal ran him out after only a few years and the prime of his career was with the Blackhawks.
