Mexico is about to be hit by a huge tropical cyclone that might turn out to be the most dangerous such meteorological event ever recorded. Hurricane Patricia set a new record for the strongest wind ever registered for a storm of this magnitude, with wind speeds reaching 200 mph. What’s more, the cyclone might grow even stronger before it starts to slow down.

An Air Force Hurricane Hunter aircraft flew directly into the hurricane last night to measure the wind speed, temperature and pressure, Gawker reports. “No weather models predicted this, and just a few short days ago, even the most experienced meteorologist would have laughed if you mentioned the possibility,” the news site wrote. “It is a feat of Mother Nature that a small swirl of clouds would soon become a storm that is now The Storm by which all others will be compared for decades to come.”

The onboard instruments registered wind speeds of 200 mph predicted to go even higher in the coming hours, and a minimum central pressure of 880 millibars. Temperature in Hurricane Patricia’s eye, meanwhile, read an astounding 89 degrees Fahrenheit thousands of feet above the surface of the ocean.

At flight level, the Hurricane Hunter plane recorded sustained winds of up to 221 mph.

The massive storm will hit the Pacific coast of Mexico in the coming hours and head further inland over the next few days, potentially bringing destruction of catastrophic proportions. If you’re anywhere in its path, especially in the coastal region, you’d better seek safety right away.

Tragic. Winds of up to 320km's and 39 foot waves already reported.

im not denying our role in anything but climate change since before humans was much more drastic and has never actually stopped.

This point is irrelevant, we are talking about man-made climate change that is happening now. Stop bringing up useless facts and information.

Perhaps things are speeding up altogether? Technology certainly is.

No, they're not. It is man-made, 99% of scientists who know what they are talking about agree. This current warming up event is man-made. There are other warmings which are not man-made, this one is not that, this one is man-made.

ok. thanks for clearing that up.

... Over millions of years.

with varying degrees of change not ever a constant. show me some data that shows an ever constant change with out varying extremes in either direction localized over short amounts of time.  Just like short term weather long term suffers the same ups and downs.

Yes, cases like the Permian Mass Extinction(252,000,000 yrs ago) evolved over millenia. 90~95% of all life on earth was squelched..apparently lots of this era's data is comparable to today's.

We're in the midst of the 6th great extinction, this one essentially caused by the burning of FF. Hence the "Anthropocene" title. From the start of Industrial Revolution 'til 1988 was a Helluva lotta warming. They say we've DOUBLED that amount(CO2 emmissions, from 1988, 'til today).

Simply overpopulation X overconsumption.

read A Mote in God's Eye.  It's very prophetic, and startling.

burning of fossil fuels is only credited with speeding this process up it was going to happen with human help or not and we are not at the level of intelligence and evolution that our technology can control the entire planets climate in either direction to prevent what would normally occure. we can help speed it up or slow it down but with our current technology we can not prevent or reverse the natural cycle.

And tell me that we were not in an upward trend upto the industrial revolution it's been in an upswing for a long long time.

plus, this storm is way down in Mexico!  Who cares about something does nothing to affect us here in Vancouver?  I think lots of people here welcome a bit warmer weather.  It means we can grow better food, and get new types of fish.  It all sounds good for us here. Screw the other beggars.
