Why Can't This Team Win In OT?

Because we lack top end talent that can put the puck in the net.

Four on four benefits the Sedin's because there is still something of a defensive system in play where the opposition can't just waltz into the slot. The time and space to pick your shot still isn't there as there are usually two forwards in close proximity to one puckholder at all times.

Three on three on the otherhand is where snipers like Carter and Benn will make their money.

It's not all about being fast. It's not all about possession. It's about what you can do with a third of the offensive zone to yourself against one man. You beat that one man and it's a grade A chance for you.

They'll win 2 on 1. They'll win 2 on 2. They'll win 2 on 3.

But 1 on 1? Not their forte.

The Sedin's need each other to succeed, and they need each other in close proximity. THAT is why the fumble the puck so much in the offensive zone and botch so many passes, because inevitably they will have to play their give and go and all the opposition has to do is bide their time and wait for that moment. Instead of having to worry about three passing lanes they just have to close off the one.

Better question is why is the team trying to get OT when we should be rebuilding this year? The daniel giveaway was a good start in Buffalo but the canucks really blew it by coming back and tying it tonight.

What are you talking about? We are rebuilding, have 3 rookies in the line up. 'Rebuilding' doesn't mean you have to tank....

hmmmm.  i was getting the NJ feed on TV.  They were saying that 3 - 3 suited the Sedins (obviously hadn't been watching recent games!!) and were so respectful that they started 2 defensemen and 1 forward.

maybe it's because our top players are not as good anymore as the other teams' top players are now?

Because we're not good enough at 3 on 3.

The guys who see the most ice in OT are too slow, even though you'd figure 3-3 would be ruled by methodical puck movers, possession types.... Nope. Not enough foot speed to use all of that available space, then get muscled off the puck and whammy...who's got the space now?

The kids are learning how to take an OT loss, I guess. Maybe give them a chance to make an OT win...

The evidence is on your tv screen every OT loss except for today.  the sedins n Edler  4 on 4 are very good but 3 on 3 there just to slow.

Why they start every OT is mind boggling to say the least. WD's not giving the younger guys credit where credit is due. N that's the bottom line. If the 3rd/ 4th lines playing well then continue to play them you moron. Geeze give your head a shake.

Looked like today the young guns were taking control. But WD just ignored it n played vrbata everywhere. man he skates away from the puck cause he doesn't want to get hit. ship that loser out please. n the lets keep passing till the power plays over sedins should be benched on the power play for the next one.

It has to do with some puck luck and some untimely penalties.   They took chances while other teams didn't and it's a difference.  They haven't had an OT PP yet so that's given.   The next OT game, we are bound to win a few anyways.

I would seriously consider splitting up the Sedins for overtime, and I said this before the season started.

Now that Daniel no longer snipes, it's like having Adam Oates + Adam Oates + a defenseman out there, or else Adam Oates + Adam Oates + a sniper and no defenseman at all.

As coolboarder said, there is some luck involved. It is still a small sample and a couple of lucky or unlucky breaks can have a big effect in a sample that small.

That said, I would also consider splitting up the twins. I agree with the many people who point out that speed is a lot more important in 3 on 3 than in  5 on 5 play. Having the Sedins and Edler together just makes a unit that is too slow. Splitting up the Sedins in 5 on 5 play would make no sense, but in OT I would pair each Sedin was a player with speed. Henrik can combine with a shooter. Daniel needs to line up with a center, but could ilnk up with McCann, Horvat or Sutter, all of whom have good speed. Henrik could line up with Virtanen, Baertschi, or Hansen, all of whom also have good speed.

Because everybody in Vancouver thinks the Twins will do it for you... Guess Again !!

I really start to think both Sedins and Vrbata will get us a game winning goal in 3-on-3 OT Hockey REAL soon!

Having the Sedins get split up into 2 different lines is a bad idea. I am even sure Vrbata fits really well on the Sedin line since at the start of the season, he has NOT been scoring any points (whether it is Goals or Assists) with any other line he was on until he has finally been getting paired up with the Sedins again just like the way it has started out for last season!

He has been getting 3 Goals and 3 Assists since rejoining the Sedin Line!!!

Our top line might not always be playing at their best to be our game winners in 3-on-3 OT but will eventually help us win some games in OT while our other 3 lines will help us win some more games in OT during other nights!

In my opinion, I would like the Sedins and Vrbata to be our 1st 3 players to help us win our 1st 3-on-3 OT Victory this regular season no matter what team it is we are facing against and no matter how many of you say they don't have enough skill, speed or strength to play with each other and win us games in the NEW 3-ON-3 OT Format!!! :D

All I am really hoping for now is our team will work on their Powerplay Time (5-on-4/5-on-3/4-on-3) and their 3-on-3 Battle during Every Practice starting tomorrow! Go Canucks Go!

Thanks for trying to understand my opinion! :)

I think we need faster players on the 3 on 3....Its all about the fast transition game and trading chances (being a solid 2 way player goes out of the window, this is a different animal)..This is why I'm wondering why WD has never really used McCann or Baertschi ,two gifted offensive players...Instead of Bo and Hansen (who have twice been badly exposed on 3 on 3)...Just my .02 cents

The team needs to score on the power play.  Wasn't Gulutzan hired as the power play specialist a few years back?  IMHO, THE PP has sucked for a couple of years now.  No consistency, poor entry into the offensive zone and no sustained pressure, if and when they get into the zone. They would have won that game had they scored a PP goal.  Terrible, terrible, terrible.

Dsjardins needs to change it up
