nucklehead
Initial results from Myanmar's national parliamentary vote -- the country's freest election in a generation -- started to trickle in Monday, with early seats going to the party of veteran democracy campaigner Aung San Suu Kyi.After turning out to polling stations Sunday, millions of the Southeast Asian nation's citizens are eagerly anticipating the official results, which could herald a shift from decades of military-dominated rule. Suu Kyi's National League for Democracy (NLD) is up against the ruling, military-backed Union Solidarity and Development Party (USDP) of President Thein Sein, a former general who has overseen a series of political reforms in recent years.Early signs pointed to a strong showing by the opposition NLD, which swept all the seats in the first small batch of results announced, while the leader of the ruling USDP signaled his party had fared poorly.http://www.cnn.com/2015/11/09/asia/myanmar-elections/index.html?sr=fbCNN110915myanmar-elections1130AMVODtopLink&linkId=18608687

nucklehead
Oh, that's witty. And Burma? Isn't that racist or something?Anyhows, I thought the discussion would be more about Aung Suu Kyi's amazing journey and the end of 50 years of military law and dictatorship in the country. Her lifelong fight for democracy and insidious persecution and imprisonment by the ruling junta. She's like the Nelson Mandela of Burma.Latest results show her winning her own seat in Myanmar’s election with her National League for Democracy (NLD) party also taking 90% of seats declared so far. She has indicated her first order of business with president Thein Sein and House Speaker Shwe Mann will be a meeting to discuss the election and “national reconciliation”. Jaimito
Burma racist? the country was called that for decades. Not sure about racist, but certainly dated. No one calls Taiwan Formosa anymore . Although technically Taiwan is a province, the official name is Republic of China.
CanadianLoonie
Oh, that's witty. And Burma? Isn't that racist or something? That government is so inept and its rule has been so disastrous for the people of that patch of political geography that I refuse to recognize the change of name it has decided for the country itself.
