yes we can nucks
3 minutes ago, lmm said: first of all it was a joke. second Eddie played better last year than Markstrom has this, so 6 of one, half a dozen of the other Sorry I missed the joke. There are fools here who would really want Eddie back ... the same fools who wanted to hand the torch to him before he was ready. I see the same pattern emerging here this season. He's a nice guy, a fairly decent goalie, and that's about it. Keeping players because they're nice isn't a recipe for real success. I mean, don't get me wrong. He's a very nice kid. Not a great goaltender, tho.
desiboynux4lifee*******
here we go canucks nation, he will be fine and it will be a great time to see him develop. He won't be as elite as Miller has been but he should atleast be average enough, if not it will show what he is. Now another thing, the hockey gods is taking no mercy on this team this year. Best case scenario he forces Benning's hand to trade Miller. Worst case is he stinks and we get a top 5. This will be interesting, again the hockey gods giving this team no breaks this year. edit nvm miller is fine
Nuxfanabroad
I'd rather see Markstrom get half of the next 20 games. Let's find out precisely what we have in this player.
Crabcakes
Look, I'm not about to say that Eddie Lack is the 2nd Coming but c'mon. He's a good goalie. He saved the Canucks bacon last year when Miller went down and that is a fact. What has gone on in Carolina this year is disappointing. Firstly, Eddy had been coached by Rollie Melanson for some time to play closer in to his net. This is how they coach tall goaltenders now because they can cover the net and be less vulnerable to back door plays at the same time. Obviously, this style has worked well for Lack. Eddy is 6'4", Ward is 6'1". So, now he is in Carolina and their new goalie coach, David Marcoux (who coached Kiprusoff 6'2") wants his goalies to be more aggressive and play outside of the paint. Eddy is at odds with this style and has made his feelings known. Fewer starts have been the result for Eddy. He has had 10 starts out of 33 games with a 3.34 gaa and a s% of 0.876 (Wards numbers are 2.58, 0.899). The team is 22nd defensively with 99 goals against. Last year Eddys numbers were 2.45, 0.921 in 35 starts and the year before were 2.41, 0.912 in 37 starts. His numbers are much worse in Carolina. Now Eddy is gone and he's not coming back. I just don't get all the hate. I consider him to be an average goaltender. That is, good but not great and worthy of being a starter. He stops most of what you would expect him to stop but doesn't make the great save and rob players like Miller or Lui do. If Markstrom can show himself to be as good, I'll be happy. I think he'll settle out but time will tell.
AngelicHearts
Honestly, I was hoping for Markstrom to start today. Miller is being overworked and that was shown in today's game. Let the guy rest for at least two days and give Marky a chance to show everyone what he can do. Our game against Tampa will be tough, but I don't see why Marky can't start. Sure, they started him during the Boston game and they owned us 4-0, but let's take into consideration that our defence is not good right now. Goalies aren't magical. They can only stop so much until one gets past them. If they keep playing Miller repeatedly then I don't think anything good will come out of it. We've lost a lot of games already, so at this point it's just about gaining experience and learning from mistakes so that the next season won't be so awful. If we lose some more games with Marky then so be it, but I want to see him play and get into the game more. Miller's old and sooner or later we will have to trade him, so give the younger guy the opportunity to play some games. Just my thoughts.

Let Miller be his safety net. Miller will play better when he's fresh anyways. His record shows that. It's a win-win scenario.
DownUndaCanuck
I'd like to see the goalies alternate starts, two at a time, from here on out. Miller doesn't play well fatigued, especially on the road, and while the Christmas break will help he needs more consistent relief.
ice orca
Marky better work on his glove hand, seems to be the book on him as lots of shots now are directed high glove side.
CeeBee51
I'd like to see Marky play maybe 40% of the games.

Some goalies go through a suck phase before they figure out how to adapt to a whole new goaltending style.

theminister
If Miller needs an extended rest then this is Marky's chance to break out. Rather than seeing the negative in an injury I prefer to see the opportunity...an opportunity, if seized, that will pay large dividends in the future. Submit your resume to the Canucks HR department then. They could use a psychic who knows the outcome of games before they happen.

He's kept them in a lot of games, so they would likely be far worse off. What with all the injuries, this team is relying on Miller's stellar play. Marks hasn't looked very consistent, but I agree with the others that think Miller needs a few breaks here and there.
aliboy
I'm glad Markstrom is playing tomorrow, regardless of the outcome, as I feel he has the ability to steal a game.

Me too. Whether Miller is fatigued yet or not, he's bound to wear down eventually. And if this team is actually serious about grabbing a playoff spot, we need both of them healthy next April. That wont happen if one is overplayed (especially Miller, since he's making a decent amount of quality saves per game). Also, I find the team plays better defensively when the backup is starting.
