Edler and Bartkowski can't turn around at speed...Bart falls down and Edler has to slow way down.

Bart has good speed straight ahead, Edler is only average straight ahead.

Pedan and Hutton are better skaters already and should only improve.

Ah I understand now. Add Sbisa to that as well, even though every time he turns it feels like he's about to fall.

Ps... Be very excited about the possibility of Tryamkin next year, i watched the Spengler game early this am..  He is NHL ready, just needs convincing.

Pedan is not slow...at all. Weber looked slow, Edler is slow, Pedan has good speed and is more agile than Weber or Edler.

I agree that he's plenty fast enough once he gets going, but he isn't quick in the sense that his first step isn't powerful enough to get off the mark quickly.

Its hard to imgaine him improving that initial step, given the length of those legs. However, that wing span should compensate for any initial ground lost.

Exactly. Larger defencemen don't need to be fast if they know how use their physical gifts.

I can't recall ever thinking Chara was fast on his skates, but he's very smart. He uses his large stick and his long legs to cover long distances.

Pedan looked excellent last night. Played a simple and very physical game.

I'm hoping this convinces management to leave him up. He fills a very obvious need on the blueline.

You know I'm all for size and physicality especially on the backend, and Pedan looked like a future NHLer for sure. But imo, he'd benefit more from refining his skills (skating, puck handling and passing) down in the AHL for the remainder of this year when injured players start coming back, and joining the team next year full time. He and Tryamkin have me REALLY excited about the D core next year, but for this year I think we will have to manage with what we have.

Tbh I didn't think pedan had a great game last night, he looked lost at times and chased the play a lot

I agree - I noticed a tendency to freelance in his zone - pursuing all over the place - but at the same time, there was generally a forward parked in his spot at the time, and I wouldn't necessarily fault his intent or aggressiveness because at least he's applying pressure and taking away time and space.  It can be problematic if there are guys left wide open as a result, but in those instances I think he considered himself switched off and playing a forward's role temporarily.

I also agree with the observation that he could continue to refine his skating and puck handling - but I'm actually more impressed with him than I'd expected to be.  He looked quite a bit less refined in his decision making in the preseason imo and is coming along nicely.  The size, edge and heaviness he brings, and that shot - quite promising.  If he earns a spot in the future, between him and Sbisa, the blueline starts to have more bite in it.

I have been very pessimistic about the d-core depth this past year. Surprise, Hutton makes the team and now, hopefully, so has Beiga. Never seen Pedan play a game before the last two but he looks very promising. If Tryamkin can make it next year the look changes a lot. Keep Edler, Tanev and Sibsa, perhaps Bartkowski and move the rest. Hopefully Hamhuis is healthy enough for a trade and Weber as a throw in.

Subban is off to a very impressive start in the A as well.

We actually have pretty good future 4-8 prospect depth, particularly on the left. What we lack is top 4 and ESPECIALLY top 2 capable depth. We have a couple of promising "maybes" but very little in the way of what one would consider "blue chip".

Mostly agree with that but thought he came on stronger as the game went on. His stick handling seemed above average and that slapper  - wow! He eats up distance with that big stride and I like how he is "infected" with the Biega "if in doubt claim the man"

Considering he is only 22 years of age he looks like someone who can be developed into a nice asset.
