Quick Summary of Benning on TSN 1040 this morning.

Probably someone will do a more detailed version of this, but here's some quick hits from this morning:

- Lots of emphasis on changing mindset. Benning asked if Prust and Dorsett are doing enough to provide "Safe working environment" for young players, Benning answered that it's not about 2 players, it's about the team's mindset to stick up for themselves.

- Has made trade calls for short-term replacement for Sutter. Benning says it's not a hot market, not much going on, but will make a deal to benefit short-term.

- OT has been achilles heel.

- Rotten Ronny called up to provide energy (rather than Shink) and because of chemistry with Bo.

- Sbisa becoming defenseman they had hoped.

- Bart has a nice breakout.

- Had a conference with all pro scouts to talk about possible solutions at C with Sutter out.

- Benning: Canucks NEED secondary scoring. Emphasized this lots.

- Has looked at defenseman, but they're an expensive commodity.

- Has even looked at situations involving players like "Duchene" and "Johansen" but states the obvious: young players cost young players and they don't want to give up their future core.

- Tanev skated this morning, might play, game-time.

- Jake has hip pointer. "Out for a little bit, day-to-day/week-to-week thing"

- No decision on Jake for WJC. Injuries make it tougher, both for Jake to play and for the Canucks' depth. Dec. 15-18th decision. Jim Benning may or may not go to Helsinki himself depending where the team is at.

- Gaunce is hurt.

It's good to see him acknowledge that he's working the phones trying to make a deal. Nice change from Gillis who was usually pretty quiet about that sort of thing.

Thanks for the recap

So maybe, hopefully, vets on the move and maybe a few prospects JB doesn't see as future core.

Make it happen JB, we need help ASAP, losing sucks.

Funny defensemen are an expensive commodity...

If he's not willing to pay the price for the pieces the team needs on D moving forward (as he did for Sutter)...it's going to be a LONNNNNNG few years until our draftee's *gulp* *crosses fingers* start working out....

What does he mean by short term, when Sutter is out for just over a month.

A rental likely. Could play wing when Sutter is back. I wouldn't get too excited...likely a Higgins level depth player who can play C.

I don't mind a low cost short-term solution because losing like they did in Anaheim and LA can have bad consequences for a dressing room long-term.

But a short-term overpayment for a team looking at most to contend for a playoff spot is not a good idea.

Still think nabbing a Luke Schenn/Adam Mcquaid/Dylan McIllrath type player for depth is a good low cost solution that could have big reward for this team.

he'll have cap room to play with starting next year too.  I'm not a believer in using high draft picks on d-men, unless it's a sure thing lottery pick.  I expect he'll either sign UFA dmen or try and get dmen who have already been developed.  We may very well see Tryamkin here next season as well.

Same. They'd come cheap and give us some NHL D depth (preferably right side) and some size/nastiness.

Still think we need to make a bigger shake up in our top 4 D though too.
