Bennings biggest mistake so far: Signing Prust instead of Richardson

Richardson reportedly wanted a longer contract than Benning was willing to give him. When you have a team in transition, it makes sense to want to sign the older players to shorter contracts.

The team needs to come first and, long-term, it may likely cause us the same issues we've had in the past: too many veterans using up spots and not enough room for our youth to join the team. This would have caused a problem as Horvat develops. Letting Richardson go has even proved a better move with McCann being able to join the lineup.

Sometimes you just have to say goodbye. ;)

I think not keeping Santorelli was a bigger mistake.  He was good on face offs, versatile on forward, could produce points.  He was also a local guy whom wanted to stay here but Benning was too cheap to sign him for 2 years. He would have been good to keep during the transition.

Benning still should have signed Richardson at 3 years, he could always unload him at the deadline if the team looked solid at center.

By not signing Richardson, Benning was gambling there would be no injuries at center...  that gamble lost big time.

Kassian could have been traded for another prospect or a late draft.

I should have quit reading at "It's clear this team is no contender". If that was your expectation you either paid no attention to what Linden/Benning have said for the past year and a half or you live in a fantasy world.

Most teams are looking for rentals at the deadline not guys with two more years at $2m. Had we re-signed Richardson, and barring a crystal ball to know Sutter would have a major injury, McCann likely would have been returned to junior. With McCann, Gaunce, Vey and Cassels competing for a spot to start the year Richardson wasn't a critical signing for a team looking to get younger.

Between his poor play and personal problems Kassian had no real trade value. He was a risk for any team to take on.

Prust is good trade deadline fodder, and has been solid for us so far.

Benning wasn't about to sign anyone past unless he was certain it was someone he wanted to build around going forward. That's why only Sutter got a long-term contract. Bartkowski, Weber, Vey, Baertschi, Corrado, Clendening...they all got 1-year deals. Similarly, Prust was acquired with just 1 year remaining.

Prust isn't or wasn't ever going to sign here period.  He just got engaged , in fact the same day he was traded.  Left his future wife in tears.  She has said she wont be moving here.  She is a French TV personality, he will be playing for an east coast team by the start of next season, mark my words. He does not want to be here, and why would he?   biggest question in this deal is what is the return going to be?  because prust cost us kassian and a 5th in 2016.    so if they don't get  a 2nd it will be once again benning takin by his trading partner.

Benning could have got Prust for a 7th straight up. He had to make it a 5th for Montreal to take Kassian off our hands.

There isn't a snowballs chance in hell we'll get a 2nd for Prust.

Ya I agree on the snowball. lol  funny talking about Kassian , he was just reinstated this morning, and with Montreals injurys to Gallager and the failed Semin tryout, looks like Kassian has an excellent chance to redeem himself.  Watch him light it up , and add more fuel to the fire to the current regime we have running the circus here.

Lulz - Kassian is on waivers.

How about trading 2nd round picks for Vey and Baertchi.  These trades, signings are just footnotes in what is in general an awful direction this team has taken.  Choosing to slowly get worse and worse until our old players have lost all their value, instead of rebuilding properly.

So what do you call "rebuilding properly"?

Trading away valuable players that won't be part of a future winning team (Hamhuis, Sedins, Verbata, Burrows, Hansen).  Drafting top end players for year or two to get a #1D prospect and someone to replace at least one of the Sedins.

Both trades were good gambles rather than waiting 4 years for 2nd rounds picks that may not pan out anyway. Less than 25% of 2nd round picks manage to play 200 nhl games.

Btw, Baertchi has 1 whole point less than Horvat in 6 fewer games with a +/- that's 12 better. He's 2 points behind McCann with 4 fewer games and -1 lower than him. Have you written Horvat and McCann off yet?

So many with so little patience. How would you survive a full on bottom out rebuild that lasts 5 to 10 years?

Who assumes the captaincy? Who assumes the leadership roles, if everyone is new to the team?

How do the younger players learn the game from veterans, if they are all traded away?

Name a team that completed your notion of a rebuild in TWO years.
