Did Sports Illustrated make a huge mistake in choosing tennis star Serena Williams as its 2015 Sportsperson of the Year over American Pharoah? Despite the fact that American Pharoah is not technically even a sports "person," but a horse?

This question, while laughable to most, has been the subject of hot debate online today following SI's announcement that Williams – human tennis champion – had, in fact, been awarded the prestigious title.

I think AP should win some athlete of the year the award.  He is a once in a lifetime horse that won the first triple crown since 1978.  We witnessed history in 2015.

How's about we give American Pharaoh the title of horse of the year?  Or if that's not enough, equine of the year?  Or if that's not enough, horse of the decade? Or if that's not enough horse of the semi-century?

American Pharaoh is going to have a pretty good life shaboinkin' a bunch of hot mares so I'm thinking he's going to eat, rest and fornicate like a freakin' boss for the rest of his life, so that's about as good as it gets for a four legged animal.

aren't they both horses

There's probably enough equine growth hormones floating around Serena Williams' bloodstream and lymphatic system, so I'd say you're pretty close on your assessment (cleverly disguised as a rhetorical question).  But I'm no doctor, so I'm just talking out of my @$$ right now.

A horse is not a person. Pretty simple.

I get that but it's almost the same as saying race car drivers shouldn't win anything because a car is not a human... But SI has Secretariat listed in their top 100 athletes of all time

But it's not the car that wins the award, it's the driver.

I did not know about Secretariat though. That's a good point.
