Patrick O'Sullivan: "Burrows is the only guy who said he wanted to hurt me like me father did - why I can't stand him"

I played rep hockey as a teen and you hear all types of stuff, opposing players some of them were flat out making racist comments towards me maybe they weren't racist but the sole purpose was to take the player off his game. this type of stuff happens all the time, im not defending burrows but come on Sullivan, you keep this stuff out of the media. Weise was a punk too for saying what Lucic said and it wasn't even that bad, this is pro sports people look at Zidane in the World Cup and how he got kicked out of a game because the opposing player talked crap about his dead mom and sister. this is sports, its tough game out there, it gets brutal. Only the strong can survive, Chris Chelios was so brutal to Theo Fleury and others were brutal to Chelios about their drinking problems and drug addictions. They both had problems and Chelios would do anything to get any player of his game.

Agreed, his best move should have been to keep it out of the media.  If he still has a problem, talk to Burrows directly or to a professional or to family and friends.

Thank you for the idiot comment.  That's a nice Christmas gift.  Burr is not anywhere near an NHL player any more.  He should be replaced by a younger player, who gets paid A LOT less, and how will be MORE EFECTIVE.  Notice how I, even though Alien, can make a point without being personally insulting.  :P

I'm sure you've been called worse.

What's really sad is that in 2015 expressing yourself still makes you a "pussy" in the eyes of many sports fans, despite the countless suicides by "tough guys" who couldn't deal with their emotions because of prevailing "suck it up princess" attitudes and got addicted to pain-killers after the physical pain went away.  Emotions make you uncomfortable?  Suck it up princess.

how about some personal accountability.  They're big boys, if they were suffering they should have got help, or helped themselves.  Life is hard, deal with it and move on, regardless of who you are, what you have (or don't have) going for you.

To sum up this thread:

- Crying is for silly girls

- Athletes should be emotionless

- There is a time limit on when you can publicly express your dislike for someone

- Emotions still make many male sports fans uncomfortable, which is unsurprising but disappointing

- no one mentioned girls versus guys.

- Pro athletes need to be able to keep their emotions in check.  It's what being a pro is. Not all can. but most do, most of the time.

- There is a reason why there is a statute of limitations for wrongs done.  Dredging up events from decades ago is usually related to revenge more than justice.

- I look for to watching your version of NHL hockey where players break down and cry during interviews because of things that were said to them on the ice.

Clearly Burr has an issue with anger.  I don't know why, maybe it was a language thing, and he didn't understand exactly what he was saying?  Regardless, he's a fringe NHL player now, so it's not a big deal.

Publicly expressing dislike and possible defamation aren't exactly the same thing.

I cried from a friggin TheChive post today. Damn thing punched me right in the feels.

Burrows is our version of Marchand. He's a rat.

Everyone around the league knows it, but Canucks fans still continue to defend him.

Love his work ethic and his story of making it to the NHL, but lets face it he's a weasel.

I don't like Burrows though, I just think this is a non-story and it happened 10 years ago.  This is between Burrows and O'Sullivan because only they know what was said.  But now I am listening to the Canucks pregame show and this is all I hear. And the hosts keep arguing over nothing just for some feeble attempt at validation.  Again, it's like they are arguing if the Earth is still round.

If Burr said that, it was too far. That being said though, it was 10 years ago. Every single person here has something they wish they didn't say in the last 10 years.

I read O'Sullivan's story and I felt bad for him. Really bad for him, but bringing up something like this a decade later is just a cry for attention

There are people i dont like. You dont see me going to the news papers about it. Its not even worth bringing it up. They never see one another.(Other than O'Sally watching Burrows on TV) they dont speak. they dont have anything to do with one another for years. and he brings this up. yea but no . Who ever gave life to this story over at tsn is a knob. You think if it was worth mentioning it would be on NHL.com or any other major site. it is not.

Even if you did go to the papers they wouldn't give a crap anyway.  Some nobody on CDC vs Ex NHL player hmm what story would they post?

Burrows crossed the line whether you like it or not and O'Sullivan has a right to be pissed and vocal about it. He's also bringing attention to a major issue with minor sports. There are a lot of douchebag parents who ruin the games for kids because they failed as athletes.

I wonder how the people defending his (supposed) actions would feel if somebody dug deep into their past and started chirping them about something that greatly affected them.

--- Where is this happening? During a game? I'll fix that sob!

I bet the tone would change.

Parental physical abuse has been proven time and time again to have the potential to cause serious psychological issues for people.

--- Can't argue there, I sincerely hope he got the help he desperately needed.

It's ******* gross that people can defend another person for chirping someone about it just because it was "on the ice".

--- Seriously?!

This thread has been a good showcase about which posters do not have the ability empathize for another person.

--- That is a bigger load of BS than all the Burrows chirping put together over his entire career.

Response bolded.

I feel bad for him too, but he made his story public knowledge and then benefited from it as an NHL'er.  You don't put that out there and then not expect to get both sides of the coin.  If you're not willing to deal with the negative attention, then don't put it out there into the world.

O' Sullivan is a whiner. This is old news now. He's only bringing it up to help further his writing career.

I was the beneficiary of an Irish upbringing and had my share of the same stuff that O' Sullivan speaks of. While it had an adverse effect on me in my teens and early twenties, I got past it and learned how to move on. I don't dwell on it, or pass on the savings to my children either. What happened, happened.

Burrows made a ridiculous statement years ago and poor victim O' Sullivan is only now talking about it. This shouldn't even be news. It's trash talk. It happens.
