Patrick O'Sullivan: "Burrows is the only guy who said he wanted to hurt me like me father did - why I can't stand him"

Context: O'Sullivan's father abused him.

I really do wonder what Burrows said to Tootoo.

sure osullivan has been through a lot. but seriously this is sports. a lot of crap is said. im sure osullivan in his life has said aomething just as bad to someone. lay off burrows. talking trash is part of the territory. and is osullivan actually saying that this is what he said " i want to hurt you like your father" or is osullivan saying burrows wanted to hurt me like my father? either way i think osullivan should keep his mouth shut. im sure burrows has had some stuff said to him that he could whine about.

Now, now...AWalk would be hurt by that.  They are just men who are struggling to deal with their emotions because their need to cry has been stifled by the macho creed.

Haha. Fair enough DIB. Nothing wrong with crying....if the pain is bad enough.

As one of the people who indirectly pays these guys' ridiculous salaries, I think it is not too much to expect that they display and live up to values that I am willing to support with my $$. Picking on a guy who was the victim of child abuse is truly disgusting, adds nothing to the game, and is below the standard of sportsmanship I expect from professional athletes. If he said this, it's bull$&!# and indefensible. That's not the way to win. It isn't worth it. Can you imagine Bobby Orr doing something like this? Sorry, defending Burrows on the grounds that "it happens" and is part of getting under a players skin is placing the bar too low.  Kids look up to these people though god knows they shouldn't. It is bad for the league and for the Canucks organization.

People make mistakes. They say crazy things in the heat of battle. Apologize and mean it.

Even the NHL is becoming a P. C pansies world. Boo friggin hoo.

Truly. These are players who slam into each other at over 30 miles an hour on the ice, and they get their poor widdle feewings hurt because someone said that they were going to hurt them like their father?

Grow a set, O' Sullivan. The Emerald Isle is close to disowning you and your purse.

I have no doubt many hockey players cry...they just don't do it publicly...like most of us. Really, what would be the point, other than to garner sympathy...wait a minute.

Sorry folks, I'm calling bullsh*t here.

I think this is an attempt by a player who wants to sell his book to revive some interest.

#1 - When is the book published?  October 21st 2015... who knows about the abuse before that??  Was it common knowledge in the league?  How does Burrows know about the abuse?  Yes, there was an article in an obscure Minnesota newspaper in 2003, when Sullivan was a minor league player, indicating he had taken out a restraining order against his father.  But was this picked up by any mainstream media?  Not that I can see.

#2 -  Why is there no reference to Burrows and his comments in Sullivan's book?  Surely this would be the type of thing which would be included there as a part of the trauma... ie. loss of respect, feelings of unworthiness, etc. etc.

#3 -  Sullivan has just gone the entire PR route to promote this book, appearing on many many talk shows, radio programs, and being featured in lots of print articles as well as online.  Why didn't he mention Burrows and his comments during ANY of these interviews?  Instead he waits till the book is fading fast, it's already on sale, he's looking for another way to pump up interest... Hey, wait a second, didn't I read something about Burrows and Tootoo....   so he comes out with the Burrows thing.

You know what, I don't buy it.

This is a tough one.

Seeing both sides of the debate might put it into perspective.

What Burrows supposedly said isn't acceptable and I think Burr knows this.  I mean, if it were Burrows' own child that came out as being abused (by someone else) what would Burrows say to that?

OTOH, you can't tell me that this is even close to the worst thing said/done on the ice to a player.  Back in the day when there weren't many ethnic minorities playing primarily 'white' sports (not like there are a lot now either I know that) can you imagine what they went through?  You don't see Willie 0'Ree or Larry Kwong 'tweeting' about how they were victims of racism and discrimination (and that torment was probably WAY worse than what O'Sullivan endured on the ice knowing how racism was way more tolerated back then).  You also didn't see guys like Bob Probert (rip) calling out all of his former adversaries who undoubtedly tormented him to no end when he was going through his troubles in the NHL.

Burrows, if you did what you're accused of you've got some soul searching to do.

O'Sullivan - you could probably have handled this in a different/better way than to try to ruin someone's image (yes, I know it's not that clean anyway) years after the fact.

So.......what will this do to Burrows' trade value? He's in his mid-30s, skills in decline, reputation around the league as a cheap shot artist and big mouth. Kinda wish O'Sullivan would've waited to spread this news next summer.

Ah there's the rub. Never mind that he is being paid 4.5 million bux to be a third liner and never mind that he has exactly 2 even strength goals against goalies despite icetime all over the lines and on the PP now there is yet one more "story" about his "character" that shows him in a terrible light. I know a recently retired NHLer who told me that awhile ago a rumour went through their dressing room that management was thinking about making a play for Burrows. He says that there was almost a mutiny when the players found out. Part of the problem is that Burrows has only played for one team: the Canucks. As a result of that and his behavior he is probably the most hated player in the NHL (neck and neck with the rat who at least still scores a lot and has a Cup ring... and a misspelled tattoo). At least guys like Tootoo have played a few places and still have pockets of fan support here and there. A team thinking of acquiring Burr will have to factor in such things as fan outrage, team resistance and a bunch of other stuff that normally doesn't come with a new player. We would literally have to give him away to rid ourselves of him. A team needing a clutch goal scorer and proven playoff performer might conceivably go for it but they know full well that there will be endless headaches involved.

Another thought just occurred to me: maybe part of the reason that he gets no slack from the refs is because they are out there on the ice and they hear a lot of the garbage that comes out of his mouth, much of which we never hear about. It doesn't take much imagination to think of the stuff he would say to players who had lost loved ones or had serious injuries or illness or sick kids or whatever. The mind reels.

I'm going to add another thing:

Burrows plays Left Wing... Sullivan was a centre ice man.

Who do you chirp to during faceoffs... the guy you are matched against.  Not the guy matched up against someone else.

Who do you go into the corner against... the guy who you are matched up with...

Why does Burrows single out someone he is not playing up against?

Something smells about Sullivan's whole tweet.

Another post FULL of complete speculation... no facts, just a Burrows hater imaging the worst.

I remember saying I bet Burrows crossed the line with Tootoo and Deb came in heavily defending Burrows. Looking forward to see what she says here. I have a Burrows jersey hanging up beside me right now but that doesn't mean he's a saint who can do no wrong. He's obviously earned the reputation of a trash-talker who crosses the line.

Yeah I brought her name up after the Tootoo incident as I wanted her opinion knowing she was a huge Burrows fan and always defended him.

She claimed it to be abusive behavior as my post kept disappearing, I kept posting again thinking it was an issue with my internet and she suspended me for 3 days.

So watch out bringing her name up she will suspend you. Best to just put on ignore list, that's what I did.

Anyways....like I have said countless times, he always has been and always will be a POS.

Way to throw some absolute conjecture onto the fire.

Tell you what: go and find any current or retired NHLer who has played against Burrows; it shouldn't be all that hard around these parts. Ask them what they think of Burrows, honestly and off the record. Then get back to me.
