It is clear the Canucks need that one star defence man. Barring a miracle trade we need to focus on the future. There is some age on this team with little or no trade value. We should be going for great draft picks at this point. The young guys are too young and the Sedins are great but not enough supporting staff. Trade Vrbata while there is some value. The goaltending future looks great but other than Hutton no possible stars coming up soon on the back end. One star defence man!!! Our defence is decent but lacking that one true leader.

Stream of consciousness posts are always harder to read than they are to project onto the page.

until most people saw Hutton at the start of this season, most thought there were no D in the system.   so, yeah, there was Hutton, right beneath the up-looking noses....

for all we know, Jordan Subban could step in and have the kind of impact other undersized 'B prospects' like Tyson Barrie, Torey Krug, had or....Shane Gostisbehere is now having...

inb4 some simpletons come in and scoff at the possibility, and ignore the examples.

Jordan has 12 points in his first 19 AHL games - as a 20 year old defenseman - absolutely nothing chopped liver about that whatsoever.   will he translate it at the next level?  who knows.

I hope Subban goes on to play in the league,  but I certainly hope JB isn't resting on that hope as well.

The Canucks defensive prospect pool looks deeper than it has in recent years.

Subban

Brisebois

Pedan

Saunter

Trymakin

Benning has managed to garner a nice mixture of speed, skill, and size on the back end for the future. That being said, Benning will have to bridge the gap between the present state of the defensive core, which is questionable (although last night against Tampa, the defense was the best I've seen it in a while) and the aforementioned up and coming crop.

Alex Biega must be considered for a full time spot on the blueline, as he has demonstrated the consistency and physical presence needed to compete in the league.

Bartkowski, if he can deal with his gaffes in his own end, has proven to be an adequate portion for a third pairing.

The biggest hole is in the top 4. I'd like to believe that, either through a trade or free agency, Benning will acquire a true top four defenseman, hopefully one that possesses some serious size as this, in my humble opinion, is the most glaring deficiency on the back end.

There is no elite, game-changing talent on the blueline anywhere in the system for the organization .  This should be a concern for both management and fans imo.

It will have to be acquired through a trade, and most likely will be.

With JB's extensive knowledge of other teams' depth charts, I believe you are correct.

Holding out until the deadline will allow Hammer to recover and Virby to step it up a notch leading to maximum return hopefully.  Will also clarify the playoff picture and separate the hopefuls from the contenders.

I just hope that Benning is methodical about it and doesn't deal from a position of weakness.

My personal belief (admittedly just my own unsubstantiated belief) is that ownership has been meddling to varying degrees  in personnel decisions all the way back since the 2012 season.   I use the term meddling loosely because let's face it,  it's their team and they can do as they please.   Why?  Because I believe ownership is positioning for a sale in the next 1-2 years or so.

As such,  I think it depends on what you mean by position of weakness?  I believe ownership mandated JB to make playoffs no matter what and subsequent personnel moves have been geared towards that goal versus the full rebuild movement.

So, position of weakness is a relative term since I don't believe he has full, unhindered discretion unfortunately.
