(Value of) Defensive prospects

Recommended Posts

I've seen a lot of people try and make up proposals for Theodore, Bowey and other defensive prospects. So my question to you is, what exactly is their value in terms of just draft picks? Is the Griffin Reinhart and Dougie Hamilton trades a good comparison to them? What about our own prospects? How much is Mccann, Virtanen, Boeser, and Horvat worth in terms of picks? IMO, Theodore and Bowey is probably worth about what Reinhart got and a guy like Fleury could probably fetch a 1st and a 3rd. What do you guys think?

Sorry for asking so many question I'm just curious about the price that we'll have to pay if we want to add an elite defenseman to our prospect pool.

There are ebbs and flows into values across the NHL.  Last couple years younger defenceman and centers were hot commodities.

For a while it was elite goalies.

If you ask a team like Montreal or Toronto they'll probably say serviceable goaltender.

Can you guys give me some exact values like a 1st, 2nd, etc...

No one can, the market & team needs/disposable assets decides values.

If someone says they know the exact value of any particular assets they are just speculating.

QFT.

If someone tells you they know exactly what a particular player is worth they're full of it.  People can guess based on comparables, but in the end value is based on what a GM is willing to pay.

If Hamilton went for a 1st and two 2nds after a very decent season you'd think guys like Morrow, Pouliot etc. would be far less considering they haven't put up a 40ish point season in the NHL and are far from it still.

Hamilton was also RFA and about to get offer sheeted for less return.  Boston knew they were going to go be in cap trouble and matching would have forced them in to some real difficult situations.  Rumour is EDM offered more and Boston didn't want to help Chiarelli out so they rejected it.  Not that i'm saying Bowey ect our worth more than what Hamilton got offered, Just don't think using Hamilton as a benchmark is the best Idea.

As to the OP original question.  It's all based on team needs,  you can't say what value in draft picks as some teams have no use for draft picks as their team is loaded with prospects.  The one team i'm really familiar with is Washington,  So in terms of team needs for the caps here's my run down.

Bowey is based on team needs.  right now the caps have Orlov, Carlson, and Niskanen on the right side.  These players are all ahead of Bowey on the depth chart.  Orlov is RFA, so caps likely aren't moving Bowey until they have Orlov locked up.  Bowey gives the capitals negotiating power. Only an overpayment would get caps attentions.  Caps also have a really good prospect pool.  The have Vrana, Burakovsky, Wilson, Laata all young wingers,  Oshi, Johansen, Ovi, Williams as current core wingers and Kuznetsov and Backstrom as centers.  Holtby in net. They could use a left handed D to upgrade heading into playoffs. The weakness' they have are, To desired to win in the now,  they haven't made it past second round since drafting ovi. and cap space.  Laich is a cap hit to them.   So with all that said Bowey would be worth:

A top 4 left handed D (preferably a rental so the cap space can come off next season),                                                             Conditional draft pick (based on playoff success),                                                                                                                             Young (not prospect) gritty LW with upside, or left handed D prospect (as Orpik is aging)

for

Bowey + Laich

Essentially that build the caps up for a playoff run this year, some future replacement and most importantly cap space next season.

If that's true and Boston refused an opportunity to better their team out of pure spite that's sad and reflects very poorly on ownership/management.

I mean it's one thing not to trade within the division/conference, that makes practical sense,  but they fired the guy and still had a beef with him?

Hammer, conditional pick and Kenins?  To get Bowey I'd easily do that deal (we still have Gaunce to promote), plus we can flip Brooks or Prust/ Dorsett to another team for a pick as we'd be overloaded on gritty but pricey guys.

This Erik Gustafsson guy is playing amazingly for Chicago. He just bumped Runblad right out of the NHL and is really thriving on their bottom pairing. 7 games played, 4 assists, +8. Those stats are pretty sparkling so early on, and he had a lot of success in Sweden obviously.

I'm sure Chicago love what they're seeing from him but we should make a claim for him while he's more or less unproven. He's a former 4th rounder as well.

I'd do Vbrata for Gustafsson straight up, maybe picks to even it up (Vbrata + 3rd for Gustafsson + 6th).
