Zack Kassian told by MTL not to report to the AHL

Definitely going to be interesting to see what happens, especially since according to TSN the team made the decision "after speaking with Zack Kassian's agent". Is he making demands he has no right to make? Did his agent give them a heads up that he might fail another drug test?

Either way, it's not looking good for Kass. I'm really worried that if he doesn't get his ducks in a row soon, the next time we hear about him will be the final time. :(

Actually, if the decision was made after speaking with his agent, it is more likely that a trade is in the works. I doubt an agent would phone a team and tell them anything bad about his client. It sounds more like a GM has expressed interest to his agent and the agent has informed the team about it. We'll soon see.

Elliotte Friedman suggested the San Jose Sharks because of assistant coach Bob Boughner who coached the Windsor Spitfires to their OHL championship in 2009.  Kassian was on that team.

They said the team spoke to the agent, not that the agent called the team. Further, why would they need to talk to his agent to arrange a trade? There's no NTC to negotiate and I don't think other GMs are allowed to talk to a player under contract without the team's permission. And why would they talk to his agent rather than directly to the GM? So unless the offer is in Europe (where there are still likely agreements to not poach players) I doubt the agent was arranging a trade. Kass simply has no leverage.

But yes, we will see soon. No matter what, it'll be interesting.

I definitely think this is a 'we'll pay you to stay away' type situation.

As I said when he entered Stage 2... the NHL has a long memory. I don't think he'll ever get another shot.

On top of that he hasn't even played this season. Has he been in the AHL since he was clearee to play? Does any one know?  I can see them saying stay away. He'd be a nightmare in the room. He's not that smart stuck in his teen years. Ya this is what Edmonton would want on their team.

theyre cutting loose the best they can.

I'm wondering if they've had enough and fell off the program over Christmas?  I hope not but in reality my mind has Zach struggling with discipline. This guy didn't become smart overnight.

Every tean knows this guys history now.

Therrien came out on the 16th and made it pretty clear he has no use for Kassian / lots of other players he considers ahead of him - so whether or not there's anything Kassian has done since, it looks fairly clear that his future with them had been written off.

He'd also broke his foot iirc in that accident, so could take some time to be healthy in a dual sense.

The Habs putting him through waivers instantly (when nowhere near ready) made it less likely for anyone else to claim him - as opposed to being opportune about dumping his contract and waiting a bit  - which leads me to believe their intention is to deal him having cleared him through waivers and giving a potential trade partner time to work their project back to readiness without tying up a roster spot.

That's possible.

It is also possible the Canadiens didn't have a trade arranged but waived him because they didn't have room for him on the 23 man roster.   It's also possible they waived him because they simply don't want him and told him not to report because they don't want him influencing their AHL prospects, as others have suggested.

I very much doubt that Zack Kassian is fit... either mentally or physically to be playing for any AHL or NHL team at present. If he wants his career back... he's likely still drying-out, working-out with a trainer, or possibly even talking-it-out with family, friends & a psychiatrist or psychologist.

Best of luck to ya, Kassquatch!

That's the most reasonable read of the situation I've seen. Coupled with Friedman's theory during the panel discussion ... wait and see I suppose.
