how come when other teams need a top center or defenceman they get it done :(

Because Seth Jones was a 4th overall pick and RJ was a 4th overall pick.

You have to suck to get the 4th overall pick, then you can have a 1C to be able to trade for a 1D.

It helps when you have Josi, Weber, Ekholm and Ellis on the back end still. Look for Ekholm to flourish now that Jones is gone.

Because other teams have not been drafting in the bottom 10 during draft day for nearly a decade, or have kept and or stockpiled all their picks while developing them and not trading them for rental assets or in bad trades.

Sad to say we were never in the same league as at least 5 to 7 other teams who would have been in on this imo

I blame Nonis for all the picks he gave away for rentals. and Gillis for also treating our prospects and picks like it was candy. plus. this organization has been plagued with poor drafting for a very long time. because of that. other teams have passed us. can offer more. I am hoping that Benning realizes we are in no position to go far in the playoffs and that we are truly a team that is rebuilding. I don't understand why management or ownership hates that word so much. cause that's the truth. and that's reality for this franchise at this time in its history. every club goes through it. we are going through ours.

its like management and ownership is in denial. I'd rather suck for a few seasons and draft elite talent than be in mediocrity for decades.

People gripe about what Gillis did but forget the nearly 7 years between Burke and Nonis where they did the exact same thing.

We dearly need to spend 3-5 years with multiple 1st through 3rd round picks to stock any kind of organizational depth imo and even then need to continue doing that for at least a decade after those players become busts or NHL stars to ensure we're competitive

The emergence of Josi rendered Jones much less valuable. We had no chance at getting him, so, settle down folks.

Josi is a LD, Jones a RD.

More the team needed a C1 and Ekholm-Ellis are a legit 2nd pairing.

But Sbisa, Vey and a 1st would have done it

Close. Higgins, Weber and a 1st is the new Ballard, Raymond, and a 1st. And to be honest, this should get us any player in the league except for 18 year old Sam Bennett. Yeah, so we definitely missed out here. GM Benning being out GM'd again. #incompetent

It's more like the fans are in denial that the GM wouldn't do what he thinks is best without coming right out and saying it.

surplus for a need on both sides. Good deal. Nashville still has Weber and Josi for their top pairing anyway and need offense. Columbus needed someone to play with Johnson.

I'm pretty confident they will keep Savard and JJ together for now. Jones will likely start out with Murray.

You're dreaming. People have such a hard time coming to terms with the realities of what it takes to get good calibre players.

It would have taken a Bo or an Edler and Mcann or …. Point is that if you want a player like that, you have to let a franchise piece go back the other way. We shat the bed back when we should have moved Schneids because management has never been able and/or willing to pull off a deal when our assets were at peak value. Lessson learned… again.
