combover
Van has no depth at d a former first rounder only 23 years old is available for FREE Mind bogling if Benning doesn't put in a claim. Free D prospect that's an rfa at season end. Depth at a position other than fourthliner , faith in Benning = zero.

From a Canucks perspective, if we didn't take Runblad last month who seemed to fit the need for a right handed offensive d-man then we certainly wouldn't be taking Gormley now. Mackcanuck
I really think that Benning is just going to stand pat with our lineup, and then closer to the trade deadline(Feb.29) he will make some moves to hopefully sell some players on expiring contracts for picks in the upcoming draft. ManUtd
At least we didn't lose an asset (however minor) for free. Sounds like he's not going to get reassigned til EJ and Stuart are back. Kind of sucks for Geertsen that this probably pushes him to his off side. Although maybe this is part of a waive the guy beforehand trades where the new team doesn't have to assume the risk of losing the guy for free and doesn't add another contract spot. How's Geertsen been as a pro? I liked him as a Giant in junior.
TOMapleLaughs
I understand the need for youth here etc., but Gormley? He needs more AHL time.

But I met some guys from Portland who played on their the AHL team. They suggested Rundblad was an absolutely stinkin talent who should make it, should have beat Gormley. Plus he is a RHD. If we pick up Gormley, it just means we have to move someone else. Pizza man should also be coming back sometime soon. Shouldn't he? (What was wrong with Sbisa anyway??) Here we go again... Rundblad was not picked by everyone else. We weren't missing anything. The guy is an AHL talent at best.

He also passed up on Rundblad, another defenseman that was another former first round pick. What's your point? Both of these defenseman aren't very good. Funny when van signs a 4th liner everyone's on here saying good depth signing even thou the system is full of them. But heaven for bid we build some defensive depth on zero risk guys ,A position this club is so pathetically thin on. It would just be terrible to have a couple YOUNG d men in the system. You're acting like we let Doughty or Letang go for free. The fact is, Gormley and Rundblad were not the answers, as much as you are mesmerized by the fact that they were former first round picks. They were unclaimed for a reason - by everyone. Last time I checked, the rest of the Pacific division did too (and they're all doing worse than us, except LA). They weren't gonna be difference makers. As good as Pedan was for us, he isn't getting playing time. You're simply making it harder for these kinds of players in your system to make it through the bigs. They've done their time. Has Gormley or Rundblad done that? We should have taken a crack at Petter Granberg or Rundblad. Weber has zero goals and 4 points in 32 games getting PP time. We need even just OK options. Just an opinion. I personally would have passed on Gormley at this stage. I had met AHL players from Portland who strongly believed Rundblad was an NHL level talent. Obviously it has not panned out.
