This could have also come to a head because Hansen was originally supposed to be out long term, Benning said in an interview last night that he will now be expected to be back in about a week.  That means the Etem trade puts too many bodies in the mix suddenly.

I think if we get anything at all for him It will be another one of Bennings project players who are on the verge of busting out and will be waiver eligible next season. As we shouldn't retain salary and I doubt anyone gives anything for him without it. And it does us no good if he clears waivers other than giving us a roster spot.

We need both the roster spot and the cap. I think the only way to get it is to take a busted project who can just disappear if he doesn't show anything on his last kik at the can.

Now we just need to do this to Burrows and not resign Bartkowski, Weber, Prust and we'll have enough cash for Stamkos :frantic:

Stamkos is Toronto bound. Not one chance he's signing with Vancouver. The Canucks have a better chance in trading for non-allstar Crosby than signing Stamkos.

Don't mean to derail but I just looked at Tampas cap situation and I don't see how tampa can keep Stamkos without buying out a couple guys or trading away other young players. Stamkos is going to want at least 8 yrs/$84M (10.5M AAV).

Vancouver has enough space for him but who knows if he'd want to come here. He probably gets traded and resigned wherever he gets traded to.

I wonder why you come to such a negative conclusion? What makes you believe no team would want him? He's a 32 year old veteran winger, who is although on the decline offensively, has been effective defensively. Why does he not fit into a third line role for a cup contending team? His contract is not unmovable, and just because he struggled this season (perhaps injuries is best to blame) does not make him unmovable. Furthermore, I think it is silly to assume Benning is going to waive him if a trade doesn't come to fruition. Benning may not get a lot back for him, but to remove the cap and roster spot, and pick up even a late pick (4th/5th) would be good enough.

Well for one thing, Canucks are one of the worst 5 teams in the NHL and they don't want him.

2nd reason, Canucks admitted they tried to trade him in the summer and no one wanted him.

Pretty clear cut I'd say.

Is the purpose of this announcement to let the league know quick he's available or to let us know?Don't understand the decision to announce before.

anyways, Higgins.. Any takers?

Probably to force his agents hand in removing any trade restrictions on his contract. Probably tried behind closed doors but didn't budge. So make it public and he either waves any trade clause or he is waved to Utica.

I'm trying to sell this one hoping JB hears me,  Higgins to Habs for Dalton Thrower, kid is buried deep in their D. Presently with AHL Ice Caps getting little to no opportunity. Had a great camp last summer. Call it a "Flyer" if you will, but Higgins would be great for Habs PK in playoffs.

Top 5 pick here we come.

Even though Higgins hasn't done a whole lot on the ice lately, to me this move also signals Canucks mgmt announcing they are moving some veterans at the deadline for picks and prospects.

I think Aqua has given his go ahead to write off the season and get a top draft pick.

Wishful thinking maybe but seems reasonable, otherwise why not wait till the trade deadline. They've made the decision to bring in more youth.

Florida might make sense.

Trade after the game?

How about during like a WWE style contract signing during pre-game where Higgins takes off his Canucks Jersey and puts on the Panthers right there.

Then Higgins scores a hattrick at the game :P
