This makes it seem like they'll take a bag of pucks for Higgins...

He's not healthy.  I think it's hard to get a return on a guy that is a question mark - and everyone knows it.

But there's no real loss here - he has paid of tenfold for the pittance they gave up to get him in the first place - a 3rd that they later recovered and turned into Cole Cassels.

Higgins. When he broke his foot blocking a shot in preseason it wrote the story for his season. Can't catch up with the league after the time it took to rehab.

It's too bad because when he blocked that shot I thought it sent a really good message to our younger players; it doesn't matter that this is preseason you're expected to try your hardest. The rest of our vets took preseaon off after seeing what happened to Higgins.

Change is upon us and this is part of it.

Thanks for the memories Higgins.

Who do we use in the shootout now? lol.

Probably to force his agents hand in removing any trade restrictions on his contract. Probably tried behind closed doors but didn't budge. So make it public and he either waves any trade clause or he is waved to Utica.

Good point. Harsh but for sure most likley

very strange for it to be so explicit.  Gotta feel for Higgins and his new family tho.  Guy has been a soldier for the Canucks

feel for him? why? we are talking about a guy who has spent the last decade plus playing in the NHL and making millions. this is the business side of it, comes with the job and he knows it. Higgins can retire at 32 and his family will be set for life. Feel for him? Hell, I wish I were him.

Maybe end up in Columbus? He played well under Torts.

Higgins and a 2nd for Seth Jones? JK

Higgins for 3rd would be great, for a 4th meh for a 5th minimum.

I'd trade him for a 7th.

Future considerations.

Anything to free up the salary and roster spot.

Interesting that they would send out a press release about this. I was at the game against Tampa and was very surprised at how ineffective he was. I think this is a good move on the team's part. That being said, he was great in his prime and was a big part of our success

Best of luck to him, and hope the Canucks can make an effective trade

We must be on different pages.. even in his "Prime". he wasn't worth the price.

If you include taxes I doubt he made a Million per year

Don't mean to derail but I just looked at Tampas cap situation and I don't see how tampa can keep Stamkos without buying out a couple guys or trading away other young players. Stamkos is going to want at least 8 yrs/$84M (10.5M AAV).

Vancouver has enough space for him but who knows if he'd want to come here. He probably gets traded and resigned wherever he gets traded to.

So.... Higgins for Stamkos?

Possible. Wonder if JB called Yzerman with that idea yet.

Burr and Higgins aren't the same type of situation. Very little correlation between Higgy and Burr getting moved.

Other than the fact that they are both on the wrong side of 30 and have seen their play fall off the cliff this season (second time for Burrows).

With Higgins, I think the management kept him around because: (i) very few takers this past summer; (ii) safety net in case Baertschi fell short of expectations.

Now that we've seen that: (i) Baertschi can play and be effective as an everyday NHLer, (ii) with the recent addition of Emerson Etem; (iii) and the emergence of Hunter Shinkaruk as a bonafide NHL prospect, cutting ties with Higgins is actually not unexpected.

I'm guessing the Canucks will have to retain the maximum amount of Higgy's contract and replace him with a player on an ELC level to equalize the $2.5M cap hit that Higgy represents.

I've always liked Higgins...seemed like an honest hockey player who gave a solid effort.  Guy was miscast as a second liner through no fault of his own.

haha lol. Not at all what I'm thinking.

Just saying that if for some miracle reason he actually makes it to free agency we would have enough space to pursue him.
