aGENT
As a bit of a fun exercise, I thought i'd gauge CDC's interest in the two likeliest UFA D upgrades this summer. In my dream scenario, we move Edler for someone like Hamonic or Gudbranson and sign one of these two guys to fill an offensive role until our current and future D prospects start coming on line in the next 4'ish years giving us something like: Yandle/Goligoski, Hamonic/Gudbranson Sbisa, Tanev Hutton, Biega/Bartowski Pedan, Tryamkin
elvis15
Don't forget your tag, J.R.! [Discussion] most likely. But I think Goligoski's the better all around defenceman. He may not have quite the offensive upside, but I think he'll be able to play in more situations if we do move on from Edler for help on the right side. I see great minds think alike Care to share your reasoning? Personally I think he's darn near as good offensively, a touch better in his own end and grittier (as 'gritty' as offensive D are anyway) and will likely come cheaper/have less of a feeding frenzy around him not being as big of a name. That should make him easier to sign and/or give us more flexibility (cap) for moves elsewhere. Edit:Though I'm sure Benning will be doing his due diligence by inquiring towards both. Blueberries
Personally I would prefer Yandle. We need a guy we win with and lose with. No more all-around players. Just straight offense guy. Go big or go home! #CanucksFA2016

Oh, he's not far off offensively, but he's far less a tire fire defensively at times. Yandle gets called the Kessel of defencemen for a reason. I'd easily pursue Goligoski over Yandle to try and get it done early and for less.
Nave
Yandle, easily. Goligoski is not that good defensively either.

I feel Goligoski is just a bit harder to play against making him more of a "Benning-type player". AKA the style of game we want the team to play. Really, I'd be fine with either if anything like my above scenario comes true though! It would be so nice to have a legit offensive D to play with the twins again before they retire. Yandle or Goli! Sure would help revive our PP (along with the young forwards, Hutton etc pushing from the 2nd unit).

One, I'm not convinced that big frame/his ability isn't going to deteriorate FAST in a few years given his age and don't like that we'd likely have to give him a TOP dollar 6-8 year contract to nab him making his contract an absolute ANCHOR in a few years. Two, I have a feeling a near-contender will offer him those things and he's going to go with wherever pays AND gets him a good shot at a cup. That's not us. Canuck Surfer
A key to this question is whether anyone believes Tryamkin or Pedan can be a solid inclusion for us next year? Signing Goligoski or Yandle just steals development time as PMD for Hutton. And a roster spot from these "small" gentleman above. Where we definitely need an inclusion of oomph. I mean we can definitely use another PMD. But It fits so much better without disrupting stuff on the right side. Demers is probably a better option for us than Yandle and Goligiski as well, even if a step down. Edler / Tanev Hutton / Buff Pedan / Demers Biega

Edler / Tanev Hutton / Buff Pedan / Demers Biega Pedan and Tryamkin get 7/8 slots (Tryamkin perhaps some of the season in Utica to get minutes) and will get plenty of time with injuries. I'd even contemplate a 1-way deal for him to keep him happy in Utica if need be. I don't want to rush Hutton, Let him continue to play 2nd PP and somewhat sheltered minutes on third pair. He too can fill in when Yandle/Goligoski get injured for spot duty in that prime offensive role. Demers IMO Dallas retains and is the reason Goligoski will likely be available (Demers eats his cap). If not I'd certainly entertain him as a quality option on the right side. I'd be a bit disappointed to not get Tanev moved to 2nd pair though... Its a fair question? 3 years ago I was a Buff basher; his inconsistencies contributed to by run ins ice cream and triple decker hamburgers for breakfast inclusive. But he's been lean and in shape for more than two years now. He tends to break other peoples bodies less than his appears broken at this stage. As for us and being competitive? Our power to generate offense is due to rise naturally over the next two years. We are bigger and faster up front than last year. And have the natural growth of Hutton, McCann, Jake, Baertschi & Bo to drive our goals for up! That's before integrating Shinky & Boeser, top flight snipers. But we also have to drive down our goals against. We are faster on D this year. But softer and near wimpy sized. Our D is an easy match up physically. It says a lot when your most physical D is 203lb Sbisa. And with all do respect to Bartkowski, still significantly missing puck skill. Buff, one of Pedan or Tryamkin and another RH PMD could skyrocket our ability to both compete physically AND add puck talent. I suppose its a lot to expext all three of those parts (Buff, a righty PMD and one of our big rooks)? Demers and Buff would be well invested money that has the potential to make us significantly competitive almost right away! Add to it drafting Juolevi... Chalky
I vote Goligoski for his consistency over Yandle. Yandle has been in the AV Dog House, and I doubt is looking for a reduction in salary. Goli is a better "allround" Dman from what I see, admittedly I don't see much of either. I question whether either player should slot into a top pairing. To be more clear, I don't mean deteriorate due to punishment/injuries etc but guys slow down in their mid 30's. BIG guys even more so. He represents a VERY large risk in 3+ years IMO And there's very little chance he's only signing for 3-4 years (for exactly that reason). I don't disagree at all we're likely heading towards an up swing if not next year, the one following but we're still not likely favourites in that time frame and a guy like Buff doesn't likely want to pin his chances on what-if's a couple years away...
