(Speculation) Freidman "I wouldn't be surprised if The Canucks threw some serious money at Stamkos"

Hope so. But done responsibly. We're gonna need someone to replace Hank in a couple years. Doubt he's going to be player then that he is now thus no first line center. And there's no guarantee anyone we have now will fill that void.

Dude, Stamkos is a first liner and a star on virtually every team right now. And at age 25, that's not changing anytime soon.

Anything over $8.8 million handcuffs this team.

Our strengths currently are at center, our needs pressingly in order are

  • PMD RH and LH
  • Crease clearing monster that can skate D
  • Solid offense first RW/LW
  • 2 way Lw/RW

We are coaching the offense out of our players in order to make them more defensively responsible.  We are needing D of both types in the worst way.  Stammer would be a HUGE draw for sure, but we've more pressing needs than another Sundin type contract regardless of how attractive it may seem

We have Pedan for our crease clearer. Hopefully our young guys can step up to a scoring winger role and a 2 way forward can be had fairly cheap via free agency or trade.

I agree we need a puck moving defenseman my perfect scenario would be Stamkos and Yandle.

I think Yandle is possible but I highly doubt we land Stamkos. That being said I would be over the moon if we landed Stamkos even at league max.

Generational talent!

We'll easily have the cap for him, so why not throw the bank? He'd be good for at least 40 goals playing with the Sedins.

I predict 50+ and the Rocket Richard if he clicks with them (let's be honest, the Sedins can click with almost any winger. This will easily be the most dangerous line in the NHL)

This is absolutely crazy talk.

There is no doubt that Stamkos is an elite talent, but IMO he doesn't fit the Kopitar/Toews/Kane/Crosby/Malkin/Parise/Getzlaf, etc. echelon. To give him that kind of money would be a mistake.

Can you elaborate on why isn't in that category of players?

His resume absolutely disagrees with you as does anyone that follows hockey.

I just don't see why he'd even consider coming to Van when:

  1. We're rebuilding and nowhere near being in contention for a Cup.
  2. Being in Van means he'd be twice as far from his home town than Tampa is.

From our standpoint, I just don't think the team is at the right stage of it's development to bring in a player like him and commit the money and term needed to get him here.

But who knows I guess. I mean, if the Leafs don't want him you never know I guess. Heck, Sundin came here for the right price.

Who in their right mind wouldn't want to sign Stamoks? to make an argument to say that we have more pressing needs is really silly, who cares if we don't have a puck mover, we have a chance at getting one of the best players in the game of hockey! Now, do I think it will happen.. no, but damn if it does.

This is pretty much my exact opinion.

Build the team around Stamkos if we somehow get him.

Why would Stamkos be a 2nd line winger?

He is a elite #1 centre.

Stamkos has been playing RW in Tampa since last year. Doesn't really see eye to eye with Cooper on that.

But yeah, he'd be C on this team, Sutter would play with Sedins. Don't see it happening though.

I'd be surprised if we didn't at least make an offer, but I'll be genuinely surprised if he comes here.

I'm not sure he'd be the best fit for us either, he's definitely an elite talent but I'd prioritize building up our defense first as it's our biggest weakness.

I realize he has been playing wing and doesn't agree with it.
